Network transfer - Fast one way but slllllooooow the other
« on: April 07, 2008, 02:47:11 PM »
On the Amiga I'm currently using the 3COM 3589D (10Mbit) network card, with the associated drivers, AmiTCP and SMBFS, to enable me to move files from my shared/passworded share drive on my XP PC (In the house), down about 3 hubs (All 10Mbit too, I think) to my A1200D in the garage.
All accessing is done from the Amiga end due to the nature of SMBFS utility, and there's usually no other computers (that are connected to the network) turned on at the same time.

Moving/copying files from the PC to the Amiga is great - Its pretty fast and the HDD/PCMCIA LED's on the A1200 alternate from one being on solid to the other being on solid.

However, when it comes to moving/copying files from the Amiga to the PC, its soooo slllloooow. The PCMCIA LED winks about 3 times a second and the HDD LED about once every 8 seconds. And CPU usage (Dopus) is down at 40%. I think it took one and a half hours the other day to transfer about 60MB of ZIP files

See the sig for the system specs.
Oh, by PCMCIA LED I don't mean the one on the card's dongle, I mean one I've retrofitted to the mobo where C= left it out.

Hopefully someone might be able to suggest something.

Regards,
Hodgkinson.

My A1 works the same way, fast downloading from my Network but slow uploading.I think is the way SMBFS works.

It's smbfs problem. Other protocols like ftp work fast in both ways.

I haven't tested it properly yet, but IIRC smbfs haven't always been that slow from Amiga to PC. I think I had some older version working OK in both directions, but I can't say it for sure :) Should dig out...

Plus make sure your full/half duplex settings are correct. Autonegotiation (NWay) only works if both ends support it - if one end is set manually, the other has to be as well.

Switches generally support full duplex, but most fall back to half duplex if NWay fails, so if the driver fouls on this, you might end with a mismatched connection, working very badly in one direction.

How might I be able to check/change this at the Amiga end?

Thanks for the replies folks,
Hodgkinson.

Well, if the connection is hub'ed, just force it to half duplex (FD won't work anyway) and if it's switched, try both half/full duplex settings and compare the throughput (the heavier the load, the better - probably best with FTP to rule out Samba problems) - if HD is faster, then NWay doesn't work in the NIC's driver.

Force it to half duplex? How? I've got a half-duplex crossed network cable and a full-duplex crossed network cable if they might be worth a try.

Thanks,
Hodgkinson.

EDIT: Oh, I've just found the perfect external SCSI enclosure for one of those 1.6" 2.1GB HDD's you sent me (Courtsey of Holley). Cheers. :pint:
