A1000 with ROMs (the links to the readmes are broken):

http://www.aminet.net/search.php?query=a1000+rom

An A1000 should take any HD that an A500 will take in it's side-slot (only with the back facing you).

You may also have luck with some (harder to find) internal controllers sitting on the CPU-socket.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Hi,

I have an AT-Bus harddisk with 40MB for my A1000. It is an external drive. The controller is attached to the expansion port and the harddisk and the according power supply is placed in a case of ca. 33 x 33 x 6 cm. Just the dimension to be used as monitor stand for an A1081 or A1084.
The controller is autobootable, so I just have to switch on the A1000 and the harddisk and insert an Kickstart 1.3. The Workbench boots direct from the HD.
Unfortunately the firmware and driver for the controller is called BOIL3 and I'm not able to attach a second or a larger drive to the controller even if the case is large enough for a second drive :-( The drive won't be noticed by the controller/driver.

Both are possible. I have a DKB Kwikstart board in my 1000 that lets me use the ROMs from the A500/2000. It did require some soldering work to install... you have to remove a PAL chip in the 1000 & replace it with a new one. There are also a couple of wires to add. I believe there is a hack on Aminet to do the same upgrade.

For the HD, that's also possible. As others have said, a 500 external HD will work, just plugged in backwards, since the slot is on the other side of the machine. You might have trouble covering up the mouse & joystick ports with one of those.

There were some A1000 external HDs built. There were also some external Zorro II expansion boxes for the 1000 that held cards made for the 2000. I had one of those with a CBM 2098 RAM card and a Trumpcard with a 50MB HD. Worked fine..

There is a hack to build a single slot adapter on Aminet.

Years ago, when running my A1000, I had a C Ltd controller that attached to the expansion port on the side.  As many have already said, this is the same expansion as the A500 just backwards.  The C Ltd controller used a 25pin scsi connector on the backside that I connected to my 100MB hard drive.  Ran quite well for several years (1989-95) until...

I attempted to add the ROMs.  Not that adding the ROMs was an issue, but I already had an internal 1.5MB expansion card connected through the 68000 socket and the ROMs needed to go through it also.  The height of the two (2) expansions made it impossible to close the box and handle the RF radiating from the box.

At that point, I decided to purchase an A3000.

My first Amiga was (by choice) a used A1000, when I could have spent about the same money to get a brand new A500.  I liked the A1000 design much better and used it came with some games, and extra floppy drive.  Over the course of a year I spent a small fortune on upgrading it with a DKB KwikStart ROM switcher, AdIDE hard drive controller, Spirit Insider 1.5mb RAM expansion board and a board or hack that came with the HD controller to make the external floppy appear as DF0:

That was needed because the massive 105mb HD was a 3.5 inch drive that was installed in place of the original floppy drive.

I used that Amiga 1000 for 2 or 3 years before moving up to an A2000.  So, you can install Kickstart ROM(s) and a HD inside your A1000 if you find the right parts.  It is a great machine and it holds the fondest memories for me.  I lost a lot of sleep learning and playing on that A1000 and I still have it.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)
