most ppc software does work and warp emulation is built in aswell as warp3d emulation which usually runs faster.

If you run MorphOS on an A1200 with a BPPC, can you still run Classic
software which needs the custom chips? (Read: WHDLoad  )

edit: without booting into AmigaOS

WHDLoad: no

Programs can use classic chipsets (i.e. HippoPlayer runs fine) but if they try to take over system they dont work. WarpUp games run faster in MorphOS tho.

Well, I got a PegII when the A1's wasn't available. I wasn't at all sure that I would like MorphOS but after a few months it really grew onto you. I can run all my usual software (exept for a MOD-player.. still looking for something like HippoPlayer or Eagleplayer for MOS.) plus all the nice PPC-apps someone else mentioned.

I only have two grips with MorphOs and they are quite silly. ;)

1. Sometimes when I move something from the Ram Disk to Work: the Ram Disk decides to meditate... nothing else to do than reboot. Never understood why it does that, but probably something i've fiddled with.

2. I can't for my life figure out where to change the mouse pointer.

anyway, if you are in the situation that you feel your A1200 is too slow then by all means buy a Pegasos. It's fast and it's very amigaOS-like. Be warned thought, that it's not entirely AmigaOS-like, you will find some annoyances, I'm sure, but after a while you just discover that it's another way of doing something and you start to like it.

E-UAE by the way, on my 1Ghz PegII, is running at fully acceptable speeds. I even run a full AOS3.9 emulated enviroment on it sometimes, and it slows down only when opening a drawer with lots and lots of files and icons.

oh, and Ambient is quite beautiful when themed.

I don't think the goal of completely replacing a PC is attainable with any of the current Amiga-related options.  MorphOS is the best of the bunch but I don't know if you would be comfortable using it as your main or only system if you're used to running Windows.

If you are used to an Amiga then you'll feel immediately at home, and your first impression will be that its just like an Amiga only more modern, much faster and better looking.  I spent the first few days running every Amiga program I could find and kept being blown away by the speed after years of having an A4000/PPC/Mediator.  A lot of old programs that tried to use the custom chips failed, but compatibility with non-hardware-banging stuff is excellent.  It even ran stuff I never got working on my A4k.  And the 68k Trance JIT is the fastest you will find anywhere.

The lack of a decent browser is obviously another big thing,  but once Marcik's KHTML-based browser appears things will be a lot better.

@Nasty

Just one question for curiosity.

If OS4 and hardware was available, would you have gone towards purchasing that instead of pegasos/morphos?

I did have my chance to purchase an A1 when they were first released but after afew posts on here and some helpful replys, I did'nt feel the A1 was going to be a machine for me as with the emulation needed! I know now that whatever computer system I intend to use nowadays is gonna need some kind of emulation to run the older amiga software. So in answer to you question if it was available then I would give it some thought. and try to look at the big picture to see what the future held for the machine and as we all know a AmigaOne's should of came with a crystal ball. MorphOS/Pegasos2 seem to have a more defined future and development seems to be alot faster than that of the A1/OS4. So really aslong as I can continue to use my favorite apps like ppaint, soundtracker (brings me onto another question)and has the bit of power there to play the PPC games and apps like hollywood without slow downs then I'll be happy, cause for classic gaming I have my 1200 here that!

Has anyone tryed to run soundtracker on morphOS? as when I run it on my A1200 it opens in a pal screenmode so would this cause it not to work on MorphOS or is there some sort of forcemode for morphOS?

Also another question I thought of is what kind of video codecs are supported on MorphOS?

Yet again thank you for all the advice given so far :-)

Nasty

I have a peg2 g4 and was a betatester for peg1. I used to have a hardcore Amiga 4000T (quickpack) with Cyberstorm PPC, Cybervision, Vlab Motion, Toccata and OS 3.9. When I got my Peg 1 with Morphos 1.3 soon the Amiga was used only for the Vlab motion. It is a complete replacemnt for the Amiga (except for hardware banging older apps and games which UAE can be used) I actually sold the prized amiga (something I thought I'd never do)

Morphos 1.4.5 is exceptional. IMHO it is far better than "os4" and has better support for classic Amiga apps and has more ports and native software. Here is some of the Amiga software I run on mos:

Photogenics 5
Image FX 4.5 studio
Fx SCan
FX Paint
AmIrc
Ibrowse
Voyager
Aweb
YAM
Simple Mail
ATC ftp
Directory Opus 5
Wildfire
Cinema 4d
Lightwave 5
MakeCD
Wipeout
Feeble Files
Quake2
Earth 2140
and more!

I'm surprised - when I've tried openoffice I've not been overly impressed.  imho it's really non-intuitive - I found myself wishing for Wordworth 7 when using the word processor (whose name eludes me).

Assuming the productivity software of Amiga works under MOS I'd be quite happy with it.  I may end up buying one, rather than shelling out to do my A4000, what with the current PV situation.
