OS 3.5/3.9 is definitely more than a bunch of 'patches'.  Improved support for graphics cards, built-in CDROM support, Iomega tools, Hd support >4Gb, 68060 recognition, new icon set, improved datatypes, mpeg support, the list goes on and on. Plus you get a built in TCP/IP stack, email and browser clients so you can get the Ami on-line no sweat.  Anachronism Industries' eBay shop has boxed 3.5 packages for only $22.00 and you can get 3.9 CDs from many dealers for around $40.00.  That's an incredibly small price to pay to modernizing the machine's OS.

> Improved support for graphics cards,
Unregged version of P96, just as it can be found on Aminet

> built-in CDROM support,
Been there since 3.1

>Iomega tools,
Look at Aminet

>Hd support >4Gb,
Possible since long before (with patch from Aminet)

>68060 recognition,
Has been part of any 060-card ever sold

> new icon set,
Whoooooooopieeeeeee !

> improved datatypes,
Based on the 24bit-pic-dt of the still unregged P96

> mpeg support, the list goes on and on.
Yeah just point yourself to the Aminet

>Plus you get a built in TCP/IP stack,
A pirate copy of a TCP/IP-stack to be precise

>email and browser
Yeah a bastarized version of the worst Ami-browser, restricted till its completly unuseable.

Oh, and the full version is now available under GPL.

3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@ Kronos:

Yes, that has been my concern exactly. I just wouldn't feel like I was getting a good deal with 3.9. And I suspect that nobody who has 3.9 is likely to admit that it is not good value for money.
Of course I could be completely wrong too :-P

@ X-ray and Kronos,

It is a good upgrade from WB 3.0, however, not to mention that the 3.1 version of MultiView is buggy so be sure to add Uniview to Kronos' list.

I went from 3.5 to 3.9 recently, I'd say it's worth it as all the stuff I used to have to patch in from 3.0 is just there and works nicely - Amidock is nice, the (registered) Genesis TCP/IP stack is also nice, the unpacker has saved me time, I like the glowicons, the occational need to look at the manual is easy as it's all in HTML on the CD ... and so on.  Oh, and I'm warming to the Class Action file manager that comes with it too.

Yes it can be done from Aminet, but it's saved me more than the puchase price in terms of my time to get the machine set up right alone.

Multiview works perfectly on my 3.1 installation. Not experienced a single bug yet.

Have spent SO long downloading library after library in order that I can pretty much install anything without it saying "Requires LibraryX.Library" that I'm siding with X-RAY. OS 3.9 is too expensive, especially in the face of the upcoming OS 4.

@X-Ray

use google to search for WHDLoad. Each floppy game I have that I wanted to install to hard drive, I have found both patches and complete WHDLoad ready files to put straight to hard disk (after running them through LHA). The latter can be very useful if your floppies are ruined.

Thanks Wibbly

My mobo comes back soon, and then I'll test things a bit better but I may have to get your advice because I don't know much about WHDLoad.

Take my advice on one thing,

If you do decide to get OS 3.9, I reccomend that you have another bootable partition with OS 3.1 installed on it. Sometimes you run across stuff that doesn't like the newer OS. Having that older OS revision to fall back on can be handy at times. It's helped me run stuff from time to time. I also didn't put my Picasso96 drivers on it in case that messes some things up as well. But the Flicker-Fixer/Scan-Doubler on the PicassoIV doesn't require the P96 software to run.
