Tivo could go the way of Amiga

It's anual sales were FAR lower than those of the A500, which sold far less than the C=64 ....

C= had income, they were just mismanaged. The A1200 may have sold less than the A500, but C= was still selling A500s AND they were still selling C=64s until almost the end. Heck they were even selling a few A600s, which must have cost nill in R&D. C= had a lot of models that WERE moving. Their stupid mistake was pouring so much money in their PC line that was failing miserably.

It's quite ironic, I think, that Wayne doesn't flame Tivo for being so incompetent that they couldn't sell Tivos for the same price as DVD players, since he did flame Eyetech for being so incompetent for not selling the A1 at the same price of a PC motherboard. I think this a very similar situation. You shell out extra cash for a special product.

If that's your point, it's the stupidest ####ing thing I've ever heard.  You must simply have no ####ing clue what a TiVO is...

A1 == a computer
PC == a computer
-- same..

TiVO == a Personal Digital Video Recorder.
DVD Players == plays DVD's
-- NOT even in the same fscking ball park.

You want to carry it farther?

TiVO = schedules, records, plays, stores, shares,  season passes, program guides, wishlists, commercial skip, etc. (No additional media required)

DVD Recorders = records, plays, stores video. (additional media @ $1-2 each required)

Both cost about the same but serve completely different functions and have different goals.  I'd love and sacrifice small children for a DVD recorder with TiVO capability built in.

You want a fair comparison?

TiVO == Personal Digital Video Recorder ($300 + $250 for lifetime service [or $12.95 per month])

ReplayTV == Personal Digital Video Recorder ($600+ to $4000 including lifetime service)

TiVO gets it right...  AmigaOne gets it wrong.  There is no debate here.

Two points peeps.

1) commodore UK were actually doing very well and at one point were going to buy amiga itself.

2) tivo wont do well in the uk because of sky digital plus

Sky +for those who dont know is Set Top Box for the Sky Digital platform in UK.  

Sky Digital is market leader in digital TV by some margen.  Well I have it and love it how TV should be.

Sky + has nothing to do with BSkyB (Sky Digial platform runer) it is system by Pace,  In fact Pace get large cunk of subs people pay to be able to use the serrvice of Sky+.

Tivo have one great problem when being rival to something like Sky+.  As Tivo has to compress the image so it can save it.  Whilsed Sky + dosn't do this as it just save's an copy of data stream of video which is being tranismited.  So it isn't seconed generation copy being view in playback latter on unlike in Tivo.

In other words Tivo is just an Dodo next Sky+ due fact of how works.  Also Tivo can not get up minute updates in programing unlike Sky as system is update live ever seconed by Sky on there satellites.  That dosn't mean that times arealways  correct thow .

Sky Digial is a good product, Sky+ is just great product made better then before!

Great. I touched a raw nerve. I must be getting close to the truth.

If you can say that an Amiga is so like a PC you can compare prices, then you can say that a Tivo is like a VCR or DVD player. After all, all it does is shows you visual stuff - I'm just generalising the same way you did in your (ihmo atrociously unfair) comments on A1 pricing. If you think an amiga and a PC are the same, you obviously are clueless as to what an Amiga is. I suggest you buy one.

Tivo gets it right? It got it so right it flopped. Probably because of lamers who think money is the only consideration...

Excellent point!  For those who didn't follow the link, "Slate" is the on-line magazine (read: house organ) of Microsoft, an effort that they once sought to charge subscriptions to read.  Microsoft makes its own TiVo-like system called Ultimate TV, and the article mentioned PVR capabilties being added to the Xbox 2.  Xbox 2?!  Has anyone else heard about this mythical beast before?  Seems to me Xbox 1 has it's own problems, not to mention that between its on-board hard drive and broadband and video connectors, the current Xbox is a decent app (BWAA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!) away from being a PVR itself.  The PS2s hard drive has yet to even be introduced, let alone rolled out, but add that and a good app, and voila!  Hell, my current 'puter is in the same state, given that I have a TV tuner card installed.

That said, and barring Sony giving me a wonderful new expansion to my PS2, I'd go with a Replay unit if I was getting one o' these puppies just for my TV.  Their top of the line player excises commercials in much the same way as my VCRs Commercial Skip feature does, but the Replay's version might just be a seamless transition between the end of one segment and the beginning of the next, instead of waiting till the tape is automatically fast-forwarded to the next segment.  And yes, there is a difference between hitting a button to skip past commercials and having the unit do it by itself: the latter way is MUCH better!
