Cool demos/cracktros which actually WORK on an a600?
« on: May 03, 2008, 07:39:15 AM »
One of my favourite things about the Amiga is/was those cool crack-group intros that would come on a lot of games (which we all legally purchased as well of course)- I often just loaded the games just to watch the demo intros and listen to the cool music. Sad part is- the good ones mostly seem to come from non-dos floppy disks, and only work on the a500, and after all the effort I've just gone to reviving my a600... I can't be arsed.

Anyone got any hot favourites they can link to? (as adf, or just the demo files themselves)- my favourites were: the "Invisible Crime"/ Banana intro off the Batman game... and the Paradox intro from Ghouls n Ghosts... awesome music.

Most of the cool stuff I've tried to run on my 600 just makes it crash... Commodore didn't care much for compatibility between chipsets eh...

Thanks heaps for the help getting this thing running too by the way =)

Have you tried going in to Early Startup and degrading the chipset to OCS? Or using a degrading utility to make your A600 more like an A500?

http://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?platform[]=Amiga%20ECS&type[]=cracktro&order=thumbup

^^^ here are hundreds of cracktros all removed from the pirate software and made into executables, and often fixed to work on all amigas.

xeron: Great link, Thanks!

RedWarrior: As moto said, try 'degrader' - type programs, or try options in Early Startup menu. Are you trying these demos/cracktros from floppy or hard drive... or both? I know my  fathers' first Amiga, a 600, could play a few cracktros from the floppy...
Maybe you could give the full config. of your 600?

I've checked the "Early Startup" -(that's the `hold-both-mouse-buttons-on-boot' trick hey?)- there's no OCS option that I can see. I have other "degrader" software and a kick1.3 file... it resets to an oldschool WB blue disk thing, but then the HDD is off limits, and let's all face the osolescence of floppies together, can we? DF0: is a dreadful option.... please don't tell me that's all there is.

I downloaded about 30 of those demos from Pouet... and 4 actually loaded, and 2 of those even returned to AOS without causing a crash on exit.

My specs: Amiga a600, with 2 meg ram total, Amiga Release 2, Kickstart 37.300 Workbench 37.31- 4gb CFHD, PCMCIA CF bay.

Can anyone name one single  improvement this dreadful v2 chip has over the 1.3 release? Nothing FUN actually works on this piece of junk...

Is there any dignified (simple) way to one-click transform to the 1.3 kick, while still keeping the hard-drives accessible... and be able to run df0: intended software painlessly? (WHDLoad a bit tricky so far)

I think I need some stronger coloured rose-tinted glasses for this thing... it's making my xp machine look so much better, and that wasn't meant to happen!

;)

One of major's improvement 2.xx have over 1.3 is just the SCSI.device in ROM, allowing the Amiga to boot from the hard drive directly.

Of course you have a way to circumvent the problem: download a program named "remus" (on Aminet, afair), strip the SCSI.device from the 2.04~05 ROM(37300 or 37350 ks) and attach it to the 1.3 ROM image you have, remembering to check the checksum on the end of the file.

This way you'll have a special "1.32" ROM, allowing you to autoboot your Amiga in a 1.3 environment. Tough this is not simple for noobs...
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Thanks RKauer- that sounds like a pretty solid solution! Unfortunately, so foar aminet has only produced "vaginaextremus.lha" ( :-o )from the remus search, and google links seem dead...

Any other a600 users out there with this file already operational? sounds like a great solution...

=)

Remus.

If scsi.device relies on any 2.0+ features, then this plan probably won't work. Definitely worth trying, though.

WHDLoad can probably save you a lot of headaches. Definitely spend some time with it to see if you can get it going.

so hang on, you want to boot from floppy? or run the demos from a workbench enviroment off of your CF harddisk?
i have "arte" on floppy as a "trackmo" from aminet. usually good as a testing tool as it hammers the graphics, sound, and as it turns out, is a test of the floppy drive too. and just needs an OCS/ECS 1Mb machine to run.

there is plenty of stuff on aminet, provided you have an easy way of getting it onto a floppy for your A600 :-)

as of WHDLoad, i'm not sure how it works, but don't you need someone to write a 'slave' for whatever program you want? but agreed, it seems to be able to (provided you have a copy of the 1.3rom in devs:kickstarts) emulate(:-?) rather well...

the ocs/ecs options should be under "display" on the amigas early startup menu... at least with an A600, youwon't have to worry about CPU caches ;-)

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Sorry to drag this back up... Playing around with an A600 this eve, and *most* of the demos I've tried work, albeit from my old floppies.

State of the Art
9 Fingers
Exodus (by Ninja/Agony, a real nice underrated demo)
Spazalytical
Hallucinations and Dreams
Desert Dream
Batman Vuelve
Revelations slideshow (mind-blowing OCS gfx IMO)

So far two demos don't run, but that may be my accelerator.

Another problem you may be having, some games (a few Pinball titles, Lotus 2 & 3) and demos (2nd half of Desert Dream IIRC) need some "fastram" in the autoconfig space, or they won't run. Aside from an accelerator, I'm guessing the only option for the A600 is a PCMCIA RAM card, and/or WHDLoad (if it works with only 2 megs).

For me, the biggest issue is I need another motherboard... unlike my A1200, I can't seem to get this thing to stay in PAL mode reliably. :/ Real annoying when a demo kicks back to NTSC halfway through.

@rkauer

You would need FastFileSystem too to be able to use normal partitions.

Anyway, I load kickstart1.3 by software on my A600 and the compatibility is pretty good :-)
