Just out of interest is it possible to 'swap' the drive for a more modern drive so that the cd32 is capable of reading better.

Oh and I'm still not having any luck.  Have tried more ISO burning tools am burning at 4x using Verbatim CD-R's.

Unfortunately the CD32 has a proprietary CD-Drive. Nobody found a 3rd party replacement up to now.

4x times and Verbatim CD-R sounds good. Do your Backups work in WinUAE?

Do you have a friend that could do a backup for you? Maybe your burner is faulty, writes the first MB ok and then craps out.

Can you try your backups in another CD32, maybe the drive is worn out and you have to geat a replacement, don't fear they are around...maybe try cleaning the lens but watch out not to break it.

Sounds like a bad burner to me.  My DVD combo drive used to burn a cd good, then it would complete say an mix of songs and only the first four were playable, this started happening even though Nero said it was completed.  Now the drive craps out after about 3%, so maybe try a new burner (they're cheap anyways now).  Also are your ISO's good?  where did you acquire them?  Can someone else burn the same ISO from another computer ect...  If i remember right I had heard of someone replacing the CDROM with another one a 4X speed one, but I'd have to hunt back into my saved stuff to find the article and what drive it was (a NEC I believe).  Heck I never tried so not sure it would work either

Just a warn: never open/edit the .ISO on the peecee!

Doing this and you'll get all files with special bits on the CD not correctly setted.

Explaining better: there is special flags on Amiga's archives and files, not existing in some other systems (like M$ Windoz). Some of those flags are essencial to keep some programs running (others don't).

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Cheers for the further advice guys.  Have tried the ISOs in UAE and they are working fine.  Also decided to try my original copy of cannon fodder which the CD32 won't read and it works on the PC so am starting to think its my old console.  Shame really as I was in the mood for some old skool gaming.  I think it will be easier to get another machine off ebay rather than try and hack this one apart.

I don't think that a "new" one from ebay has to be much better than yours... why not try to get a new laser? Vesalia in germany should have some maybe AmiKit too... but before you buy a new one:

Try to clean the lens with some alcohol or window cleaner and a piece of cloth that is made for doing this kind of stuff.

FIXED IT

Decided to open the cd32 and have a look.  On the CD Drives board (under the metal cover) there are 4 little blue chaps that you can adjust.  Since i thought my drive was knackered I gave them a little tweek firstly right after which nothing at all worked then left after which everything works.  Don't asked what they are, how they worked or if it will work for you as I don't really have a clue.  Perhaps someone could shed some light but is safe to say she now reads the cd-r's as if they were originals.

Hey congratulations, have fun with your CD32.

Maybe you increased laser voltage? Helps on "old" Playstation II's also. Playstation drives are crap...

It's a known trick on Sega Saturns too. I had to do it to mine. Changing the potentiometers increases the laser strength, which a) shortens the life of the laser (but hey, if it's not working anyway what've you got to lose!?) and b) sends a higher intensity laser beam which reflects better because it's stronger, so the receptor picks up the data better.

Eventually, though, all the lasers will be put up to max power and still not work, then it's new-laser-time.....

Edit: Incidentally, I've not tried this but in theory this should allow the drive to read CD-RWs too, if you up the voltage enough....

Disclaimer: Cranking up the voltage can fry your laser, so if it's working better don't try it.

Forgot to mention this when i replied first...

Hi,I agree with Donar.
But a Laser pickup replacement part is around 17 Euros for a CD32 ... (Sony KSS-212A  but why it's not mentionned in the FAQ ????)

I think i'll leave mine as it is now.  I had already ordered a new drive for the cd32 so if the laser goes i'll just swap out.  But as the other have said if this is increasing the voltage then i would recommend only touching it as a last resort i.e. when the drive doesn't work anyway.
