@ McVenco

Microvitec makes the only currently availalbe 15KHz monitor that I'm aware of. Unfortunately, it's geared towards hospitals, researchers, and scientists with bulk purchasing power. If I'm remembering correctly, they quoted me a price of around $1000 US for a single unit.

The older MultiSync/MultiScans did go down to 15khz. Among them, Sony CDP1302, CDP1303, NEC MultiSync II, Mitsubishi AUM1381, that I am aware of and have tested. There was actually a NOS Mitsubishi AUM1381 on EBay a couple weeks ago. These are hard to get. Just keep your eye open on EBay.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

I used to have a Mitsubishi AUM-1381 back in 1989.  It was a pretty decent monitor that worked with normal 15khz amiga output as well as my microway flicker fixer.

I look for them on ebay once in awhile, but find the same guy trying to peddle these things for ludicrous amounts of money.

Mitsubishi AUM-1381 refurb

If you want to plug a SCART plug straight into a monitor go for the Amiga branded Microvitec 1438, 1538 or 1764.

The only disadvantage being that PAL:Hi Res Laced will flicker - not so if you had any old PC monitor that could go to 30Khz and you got yourself a Scandoubler/Flicker Fixer.

What would be cool is an adaptor/hack so that Amiga scandoubler/FFs could be used by all home consoles such as Jaguar/Sega/Nintendo. All you'd need to do I suppose is connect the console's RGB pins to the RGB input on the scandoubler.

The Dreamcast has it's own dedicated VGA box but not all games work with it.

An LCD TV is another option but, as I have just written on another thread, the Samsung SyncMaster 710MP I just bought is a bit crap.

:-(

Exactly what (standard Amiga) screenmodes can the 1438 display? I bought one this week off the internet for a meree 30 Euro, but I'm only able to collect it at the end of this month. Does it also have a standard RGB connector or do I need some converter to hook it up to the A1200?

Every Amiga mode. If Amiga badged, it should come with 23pin RGB plug.

According to the pictures he sent me, it's badged Amiga. He used it with an A1200, so I shouldn't be scared it doesn't work then  :-)

That's a good deal!

As far as I can understand the Microvitec 1438 can display ALL Amiga modes as it can sync down to 15Khz horizontal refresh.

The 1438, 1538 and 1764 had a cable coming out the back which attached directly to the Amiga's video port utilising RGB signals. The 1701 wasn't Amiga badged and had a VGA plug but was still Amiga 15Khz compatible if I remember correct.

You won't need a converter but do remember that screenmodes that are interlaced will still flicker like they would on a TV. This is because the image is made up of two seperate interchanging meshes of pixels to form a higher resolution screen. I think this was used because the chipset wasn't powerful enough to handle 640x512 in one field... could be wrong. I know 640x480 in Multiscan:Productivity mode is not interlaced but is dead sluggish.

You might need a set of speakers too as I'm not sure if all 1438/1538 had integrated speakers. If you get PC speakers be sure to get a small 2xphono-3.5mm adaptor.

I don't have a 1438 etc. so can't say for sure what connectors it has... there is one on eBay being used on an A4000/PIV setup which is odd as the PIV had a VGA connector. Maybe someone can clear this up.
