Minor rant
« on: April 09, 2004, 05:05:56 PM »
It's a beautiful day here in England, as I'm sure it is in many other users' countries.

The sun makes me happy, I get that giddy feeling, "The summer is on its way" as I walk along the road with my dog. I live in the country - birds are perched on the top of hedgerows singing, the last of the daffodils are starting to look a little tired, but there are still primroses and dandelions coming up to replace them. The hedges and trees are starting to look less bare, with the first signs of bloom appearing.
As I walk with the dog, awash with happiness, I see three people coming the other way. I bid them 'Good Afternoon' (I live in the countryside remember, its not too uncommon for people to do this) and their reply?
- Nothing

Now it hasn't ruined my day or anything, but the ignorant {bleep}s could have at least have bade me a good afternoon, despite any circumstances that may exist that I don't know of.

Anyone else got a minor rant?

I hate that too, it's so rude and it makes you feel like such a tool as well. :-(

Although I suppose I don't look exactly "respectable," it really offends me when people don't smile back. Particularly older people for some reason. I hope to God I'm not that miserable when I'm older (although it seems like they're doing their best to make that happen.)

I once offered to help an old lady struggling with some heavy shopping. She immediately assumed I wanted to mug her. I politely explained that I had no interest in doing so, but she genuinely didn't want to trust me and so struggled on.

I was left feeling a bit stupid, but it annoyed me later when I thought over it.

Now I'm not saying anything bad about her, but it's a sorry state when that's the conclusion people jump to.

:-o Almost exactly the same thing happened to me!
I was on the Underground, and I saw a lady with a great big holdall struggling up the stairs. I immediately went and offered to take the bag, she accepted my offer, if a little hesitantly, but then kept a hand on one of the straps. I could instantly sense the lack of trust she had, but it's awkward carrying a bag like that, so I pretty much had to pull the bag from her grasp; I carried it up the stairs, gave it back to her, and walked away wishing I hadn't bothered to be honest.
Though I understand, as you make the point Karlos, that its more symptomatic of society than it is her fault. It's just sad, that's all... :-(
