Old-style game released!
« on: September 18, 2004, 02:11:20 PM »
Hi all,

I just wanted to tell you that I have just released a small, old-style game for our classic Miggies ;-)
It's freeware.
More info at this website.
Let me know what you think about it and enjoy!

@Acill

As seer noted, it won't, unless you use an emulator (I myself have been forced to finish the development on UAE under Linux on A1).
You know, this game was all about making an old-style production...

Enjoy!

Nice game! I like the style of it all.

Glad to know you enjoyed it (I'm assuming you've tried it and not just surfed the website)!

You have really put some time into this.

Definitely... it was for fun, you know :-)
If you've read the intro part on the site, then you also have a rough idea of how things went.

BTW: if you're curious, I can give you also the old version: it has less cards (and some of the ones available look a bit worse) and less gameplay-related features, but it also more gfx effects, it should (can't remember) have audio, and even more... bugs ;-)

But however, a BIG negative point
is the socalled "Tilt" feature though...
That really sucks!

I somehow sense your nerves have been hit :-D

Don't worry: as your gaming improves, you'll soon forget about it.

But, wait a sec!
What do you mean by
Quote
It slows the whole thing down!
So cut it out of the game and compile it again,
it's more playable then.
?

Do you mean just the fact that your hand is halted for 12 seconds, or that the game runs slower?!?
The first is the intended feature, the second is clearly a bug!
Anyway, if you are referring to the feature, well, you have to look at it as a "malus" (as opposite to "bonus"): you do get extra points with consecutive matches, so it's only fair that you get what you deserve when you make mistakes :-P
My advice is: follow a precise and logic scheme when uncovering the cards (no random picking) and you'll hardly have problems with the TILT.

@thread

BTW: yesterday I have updated the instructions section of the website, which originally did not describe all the features... have a look at it for a better understanding of the logics behind the game.

is it oldstyle-enough that it doesn't work but with your particular Amiga configuration only? :D I mean stuff like not running in amigas with 1MB of Chip, or ECS chipset, you know the drill :D

Good job supporting classic Amigas, shame about the requirements (doesn't look that intensive for it to need an 020)

No doubt your point is absolutely valid.
Sure, an unexpanded A500 could cope with it without problems.

However, let me explain why it needs a 020.

I will not repeat what's written in the introduction and history pages of the website, but I have to point out one thing.
Along many years of programming I have developed a quite large library of routines of my own (I believe that every coder does this). I started with 68000-compatible functions, and, in fact, the original game did run on A500s. However, as time went by, I moved to 020+AGA productions, while, at the same time, constantly improving and extending my library of routines. Of course the new routines were 020+ only, and the old ones that got updated/rewritten also became 020+ to exploit the capabilities of the higher CPUs. After many years, the whole library became 020+.
So, when I decided to re-code the game from the scratch, I obviously made use of the latest library, because it's better than the old crap under every aspect.
The consequence is... well, you see it by yourself.
Given that this project was just for fun and that I have other things to do in life, I could not bother making it 68000-compatible, given also that by now there should be very few plain A500 active.
I hope you understand.

It sure is 'old-style'! There seems to be no mention of RTG/Pegasos compatability.

I hope you did not look for that in a website that starts with these words: "... it's 2004 and still this is a nostalgic, oldschool, asm-coded, hardware-banging production for... CLASSIC AMIGAS! ..." ;-)

First thing I'd wish for as a player is to be able to use the mouse. Other than that well done!

The original version does use that control method, indeed, but I changed that just because it did not felt very good.
I think I can build a mouse-driver version in a minute, so, if you want to try, I can mail it directly to you. Just let me know.

Shure, would be nice to see!

OK, now you can! :-D
From the download section of the website now it's possible to download the Original Edition (just rescued from Aminet: I've only changed the directory name to MeMO_OE and temporarily packed it as a .zip, because I don't have an Amiga at reach right now). Be careful! That version is a bit buggy, so I recommed running it from RAM:.

Moreover, I've also updated the newest version so that it is possible to use also the mouse, as requested by jjans (look at the usage page of the website for info).

Enjoy!

Of course I do man, I was just being sarcastic about the oldschool bit

Yeah, I see. The fact is that my "oldschool" was mostly about the style and the making of the game, rather than the target machine.
Of course still I said "classic Amigas", so your observation is still correct.

and mentioning the 020 was jsut an expresion of wish that it would run in something like my A600.

Well, why don't you try the original version, then? ;-)
It's a big buggy and it has less features (yet more effects and even sound), but it *should* run also on 68000.
It's now available from the downloads section of the website.

Enjoy and let me know!

It looks quite nice from the screenshots, but i sadly cannot try it out as i only have a A500 with 68000 cpu.

I'm sorry.
Anyway, you can still try running it with UAE or, if that's not possible for you, you may want to try Original Edition which, as I say just above, it's now available in the download section of the website.

Have fun!
