Anyway 256 icons aren't much different from png 24bit icons. For our eyes there isn't difference.

The main difference between 256 colour and PNG icons is Alpha Channel, not the number of colors. The difference between a 256 colour one and a PNG can be minimal, but it can be like two planets apart. Depends on the icons. Alpha Channel is mostly used to provide antialias to the edges, or for providing shadows or transparency. It's rare when the number of colours comes to play, but given that PNG icons are usually larger, 256 colour ones soon loose the battle.

However, I liked Mason's older icons better. Many give the impression that there is something lacking with their edges.

EDIT

Never forget, 256 unique colors are only 16x16 pixels. :-)

And yes, some images can be scaled down to 256 colours without noticable loss of quality. Anyone who does sensible web design knows this.

And some don't, and dither comes to play. And some are awful even with dither.

Wonder how different some posts here were if those OS4 icons were 24 bit. I bet that "256 colors are enough for everyone" would vanish in the haze... :-)

For sure i'm not as you described. In my opinion 256colors is enough (at least for now), OS4.x will have 24-32bit icons in the future. But i think it isn't essential.

Well, I like the original 4 color icons as well. Not to mention MagicWB(8), FantasticWB(16), NewIcons(256), etc.

So X "colors is enough" is a very relative statement. All modern system sports 24 bit + 8 bit alpha. It's always easier to support an older system with a more advanced system, than in reverse order.
