3) Anyone with one of these ever used an external CD/DVD drive on it?

Yes, I have a little slim CDROM and it works just fine. It takes 2 cables however, one for data and another for power. I have never had a problem; I just plug it in when needed.

For devices that draw alot of power from usb, a powered usb hub is recommended.

No one can confirm for you, unless you state the exact model cd drive you are asking about, not every one has the same power requirements. It's really not worth getting worked up over, any computer shop is going to have powered hubs for only a few bucks.

Well, this was recommended to me by Michael B. E3B, to use a powered hub, when using a dual cable USB CDROM drive.

Still, I have not had an issue at all with mine, connected direct. I also do not leave it plugged in all the time, aforementioned.
