Yes, that's why I don't use oil, nor Teflon spray to lube my chain. I use something called Supreme Black, which is a suspension of wax in various alcohols with just a teensy bit of oil. The theory is that the oil is sucked into the bearings of the chain through capillary action, and the wax creates a dry, hard, somewhat flaky, and non-stick outer coating. I haven't tested it fully yet---dune biking is very heavy-going and I need to build up some stamina first :-)---but I've read sufficient stories of people on the 'net who are pretty enthusiastic about it.
Now of course chain cleaning and lubing is almost a Holy Issue, but to me it sounds like it might work.
