Anybody know where to get latest Amiga DOOM ports?
« on: September 07, 2003, 01:16:28 PM »
Hi,

Having changed hard drives recently I thought it might be fun to reinstall a few old games.

I have ADOOMPPC 1.3 and DoomAttack 0.8 (I think). I have seen references to more recent versions of these but they are all old enough to have long gone from aminet.

Anybody know any other places to get them? Most of the pages I found just have links point to the non-existant aminet archives...

Did anybody ever port GLDoom to Amiga?

Ummm... Aminet doesn't delete its old archives.

Supposedly the US, UK, German and Italian mirrors are all complete. None of them have these files.

US game/shoot

German game/shoot

UK game/shoot

Italian game/shoot

I cant find ADoom/ADoomPPC on any of the above.

@edderkop

Yup, found lots of pages that all ultimately lead to links to aminet

@xyth

Thanks, but that's ADoom 1.3 (which I have). Supposedly it got up to version 1.7 :-?

You can find the binary and source at Amiga projects by Jarmo Laakkonen.

I already tried. The links to the binary and source on Jarmo's page point to archives stored on aminet. They aren't there, however.

@DoomMaster...

Gee, you don't say :-) I've got a PC and it runs the various PC incarnations of Doom fine :-P
If I wanted a PC version of Doom I wouldn't have asked for "latest Amiga DOOM ports", now would I?

Right, time to go off topic :-)

Don't take this the wrong way but you really amuse me. Clearly, you seem to prefer newer, better software, else you wouldn't have mentioned PC doom ports, which are indeed the best around. They make classic doom, king in its day, seem antique.

Yet, when it comes to amiga hardware, you seem to do a total U turn. I don't have a problem with the 2000 being your favourite thing since sliced bread, but let's get realistic...

The A2000, king in its day, has been totally surpassed in performance and I would also argue, expandibility, by the very models you seem to insist are not worth owning.

Now, I'm really curious. Just what exactly do you do with your A2000 that can't be done on any modestly expanded A1200?

Going back on topic again....

@edderkop

Thanks, ADoomPPC 1.7 is indeed there. Wonder what happened on aminet? Bizzare.

@Xeron

I agree totally about the features added to 'classic' amiga doom, but since going open source, PC doom afficionados have developed the game into something more akin to Quake2.

They added fully 3D OpenGL rendering, dynamic lighting, md2 support (for models), scripting etc.  The actual list of enhancements is much longer.

I assume DM was referring to one of the above 'advanced' doom engines for PC.

I've got a mate here in Manchester heavily into creating doom mods for these newer engines and I've seen some of his work. It's good stuff :-)

Personally, I'd love to see an AmigaOS port of one of these more advanced engines (PPC with miniGL might do it).

Your best bet is to hunt around doomworld for them.

I think jDoom is one of the more enhanced engines. Hell, wheres' the_heretic when I need him? He would know but is very rarely here...

-edit-

Some JDoom shots here
