I started on irc. The MTV Europe program Most Wanted (hosted by Ray Cokes) had an on screen chat room.
a500 + 2400 baud modem + amitcp = awesome
The modem & isp account was borrowed from work, all I had to do was pay the long distance phone bill....
Gotta love telnet and the ability to still visit boards today!
