Ich war mit freunde in Deutschland 8 jahren zuruck. Wir waren in ein bar, und ich und ein freund war in ein "Tampert mood". Ich bestellde ein mineralwasser, und er ein Tropical drink. Ich lass mein Studentenpas sehen an der barkeeper, und sagte "Kriminalpolizei"

Der tropical drink war sehr alcoholischer
Der mineralwasser nicht

Ok, I decided to "bite the bullet" and look into taking an actual German class... I went down to my local language school and had a look at their courses, all are reasonably priced and had acceptable timetables... So I took their "level finder" test to see where my current level of German is at.

The test was simple, 200 questions, all in German and I had to answer as many as possible in 20min. Early questions were easy, simple noun and verb agreement stuff... Later questions were more difficult and seemed context sensitive... Should I uses wollen or sollen? u.s.w... Word order and tenses were tested heavily.

The second part was 5min talking with an examiner...

Anyway, results back... I scored 86% Reading & writing... 20% listening and speaking... They don't know which class to put me in... My Reading and writing puts me at Advanced level... My listening and speaking puts me in at beginner level...

They suggested I go upper intermediate... With a proviso that I will struggle with the listening speaking part... But I might be able to catch up...

You obviously need to go to germany.

Dutch 70s/80s band, "Doe Maar". Here they sing their painly longing (do something against the pain) for the night nurse.
