If I know it correctly, in the jungle there's a serious lack of proteines. Cannibals eat their enemies to get these proteines (as far as I know cannibalism by humans mostly only occurs in the jungle).

I thought that was more the practice of headhunters, to collect heads, and dry it, so these shrink to more portable proportions so they can carry these with them to "gain their powers".
But you're most probably right that cannibals applied it too on their cannibalistic practices.
