There is no modern equivalent for Frontier these days. We have much faster and complex gaming consoles, we have graphics to die for, but we just don't have the games that we used to!

Oolite if you have OS X, Windows or Linux box... It's closer to a modernized Elite than to Frontier (personally I never liked Frontier much anyway). It's open source.
The basic version is pretty much prettied up Elite, but there are
tons of expansion packs which both make it look amazing and adds all kinds of other functionality.
