when you get into m-theory, multiple universes, etc. etc. you are far from empirical science and begin to use circular logic and nubulous hypothesis based on nebulous hypothesis. you can come up with some pretty strange ideas to explain your stand. 32 dimensions etc.
it is possible to mathematically prove imaginary theories and have them look plausible even if they are based on nothing. much of the academic world is based on getting published (and getting a grant) your work doesnt really need to lead anywhere. controversial stuff can get you published. and since they are arguing imagination a persuasive argument can get you pretty far.
