I'll add something here.

On sunday I powered up my A600 for the first time in 9 months and I smelt something funny, like a leaking battery. As I had replaced the clock battery last year, I knew it could not be that.

Audio was scratchy. I opened the unit and woe and behold, a 22uF electrolytic, C303 near the Audio filter had leaked. There was some black goo on the PCB which I removed with PCB cleaner.

My dead CD32 supplied a replacement part and it works fine now.

The battery I replaced was on my A601 1MB expansion :-D

I mentioned the battery as the smell wa ssimilar to that when a battery has leaked.
