My hard disk is still alive!! but ...
« on: August 29, 2008, 05:27:21 PM »
Hi people,

Yesterday I started playing with my IVS Grandslam hard drive which did not work for a long time. I always thought that the problem was with the hard disk inside it. However when I removed the hard disk and tried to connect it with my amiga I realised that Workbench could not see the additional 2Mb fast RAM. Therefore I suspected that the SCSI controller was not working and not the hard drive.

Today I came back from work and removed the hard disk I have in the GVP HD8+ and instead of that one I connected the hard disk I had in the Grandslam unit! ... it worked. The same workbench I used to use when I was a Kid was infront of me again.

... but I have a problem.

You can imagine that the most dear thing on that hard drive are the saved games. These where on 'hd2'. When workbench is comming up I can see 'hd1' named 'Applications' without any problem. However on desktop I can see 'hd2:????'. In the past this 'pass-time'. Does this mean that this partition is damaged and that I lost all my saved games ;-( What can I do? Do you people think I can still recover anything on this partition or maybe I can remount it or something. The workbench I have installed is 2.04!

Regards,
Sim085

Is this an amiga tool? I was thinking of maybe connecting this hard disk to a pc! Directory Opus does not allow me to enter in this partition; tells me to insert disk or something.

Hi, I found a pc floppy which works. I put scotch (transparent one) on the whole which does not have the write protect control. I inserted in the Amiga and on workbench it shows me df0:????. How do I format it now? and is transparent scotch good?

My hard disk does work ... I can see different partitions without any problems. The problem is there is a partition that workbench cannot read. This is the partition where I had my games saved (which makes it very likely to get corrupted since I think I only made use of that partition).

When I insert a floppy in my Amiga I always get 'DF0:????'. I do not get 'PC0:????'. Also typing 'mount PC0' gives me an error. I have an A500+ with Workbench 2.04 installed on it. The disk I inserted seemed to work fine on the PC. However when I put scotch and inserted on the PC I could not understand how to make it format at 720k.

Thanks A4000_Mad for the screen shot. That helped me a lot and I did manage to format the disk. Now how do I move the DiskSalv11_32.lha to the disk. Is it just a matter of saving the .lha file in the disk. Also when I put the disk in Amiga I still get DF0:???? ... is this normal?#

Sorry for the stupid questions, never did this befor.

I live in Malta; However I do not mind doing all this :) at least I am learning out of all this.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I moved the lha file on the disk. I then went to Workbench:Storage/DOSDrivers. I inserted the disk and clicked on the PC0 icon. When I did this I got the following error.

C:Mount
Program failed (error #80000004)
Wait for disk activity to finish

and I have the option to either 'suspend' or 'reboot'.

I thought this could be because of some version problem. I therefore inserted the storage disk of workbench 3.1 and it gave me the same error :(

Any ideas?

Should I maybe not boot from the hard drive?

PC0 is present on my workbench. However when I click it I get the error mentioned previously. I will check for the other files. However without PC0 working I can't go forward right?

Hi,

At first I could not see these files when opening the directory from workbench. However I then opened directory opus and I found the two files you mentioned in their place. So can't understand why PC0 is not working! :(

Guess you'll find this in the morning.

I did as you suggested, copied the mount file from the Workbench 3.1 disk to the Workbench installed on the drive. After that I could see the contents on the disk :-) :-)

I am going to click salvage now ...

Thanks A4000_Mad and kvasir for all the help given. I have played with DiskSalv2 a little and with salvage I managed to backup all the files I had on hd2. I then used the repair option and hd2 was emptied. I copied the files I previously backed up and things seem to be working again :) So thank you very much. Also I learnt how to make transfers from PC to Amiga using floppy disks :) Thank You!

Does fat95 come with Workbench 3.1? Or I have to download it from somewhere in order to have it available for Workbench 2.4? (like I did for disksav2).

Also is it possible to move some files from the Amiga to the PC using this method? At the moment I am at work so cannot really see of fat95 is already in my Workbench L directory!
