Install this SCSI CD-Rom... GRR
« on: March 25, 2003, 12:50:32 PM »
Hi

I've been trying to no avail to install this TEAC SCSI CD-Rom on my A4K, and Scuzzy on Amiga is something new to me.

Needless to say, the CD-Rom drive has been tested, it worked flawlessly on a Linux PC attached to a 2940 SCSI board.

What I want to do :
# Install this CD-Rom on the 4K using a floppy-based WB 3.1
# Install OS3.9 From the CD I just purchased.
# Finish to populate this SCSI chain with 2 more BIG Scuzzy drives.

Setup :
A4040 with 3.1 ROMs and 16 Mg RAM,
A GVP HC+8 Series II Rev. II Full of RAM (8Mg) with One HD For now (2 are waiting to be installed) that was the original one, I guess.
it's a 520Mg Conner SCSI drive, at least that's what HDToolbox is telling me, no indication of the size on the drive. There is a 3.1 WB installed on it, but I don't quite "trust" it. Lots of patches, refers to HardWare no longer present, etc.

What I'm trying to do is to just setup a floppy WB that would allow me to access the CD.

When I load HD ToolBox, (yes I *did* edit the tooltype from scsi.device to gvpscsi.device) I cannot see the CD, no matter what I try. I do see the Conner drive.
When I tried my other Scuzzy HDs, it showed nonsensic values, and refused to write to it (write error 25 I guess)
that's why I want to install them under OS 3.9 only.

I did put a CD0 DOSdriver in DEVS:, with also the right "gvpscsi.device" in the tooltypes, but no luck getting it to mount.

No way to CD into it from a shell too :(

What Am I missing ?
Is this GVP Board auto-terminated (I'm not using external units) or should I set some jumper ?

Can somebody tell me what a mountlist is, I mean, what mine should look like ?

Please help, I'm getting pissed off and already broke a thing just to calm down  :-x

is it this you got ??
gvp :-?

Yup, exactly. It makes thos total amount of RAM 24Mg, and DMA, witch is pretty cool.

Now I have no other indications about the board's SCSI bus. I saw no termination Jumper, but I'm really fearing that it has to be physically terminated...

But hey one question : If I *do* have a termination problem, is it normal that the Conner drive is still mounting w/o problems ?

I hope I make meself clear with my Iraqi English  :-P

Thanks for help. I'm about to BEAT the kids just to chill me out  :-P

you are correct you have to teminate the scsi chain youself but some scsi drives have a jumper on the back  to teminate it.(does not work alle the time tho)  ;-)

Oh yeah I know that, but I was wondering : some old scuzzy boards wants, well *needs* to be terminated on BOTH ends, the internal way (it's OK, I *do* have auto-terminating units) AN the external, with either a Plug or a jumper. If somebody knows this detail about the GVP HC+8, please post so.

Hell, I'm trying ALL LUN Combinations !

I'm really wondering about this "mountlist" bit : Don't I need one ?

You need to check the SCSI ID in HDTOOLBOX for your CDROM, which ever number is shown will be your CD mount number i.e CD0 or CD1 or CD2 or CD3 or CD4 etc..

this is not correct the id and mount number is not the same thing.

Yes, this was confusing, thanks, because I only have this CD0: in devs:, with the "gcpscsi.device" tooltype.

I'm sure there's something else to do right.

(Is'nt usenet GREAT ? I remember situations like that , only much less comfy when I was *alone* with my A500)

I also use a TEAC (You can activate the termination
by setting the jumper) ofcourse only when the CD-ROM is the last in the SCSI chain...
You must set the SCSI ID in dosdrivers (CD0 by default) to the ID of the CD-ROM..

AHA ! Now *this* I did not know ! Trying right away, thanx to all of you  8-)

Well now what I have is "UNIT=2", witch matches the LUN of the CD-Rom, but is this the correct syntax for a GVP one ? I'll try to change it to "SCSIUNIT=2"...

What I have in this damn icon's tooltypes :
Default tool : C:Mount
ACTIVATE=1
DEVICE:gvpscsi.device
UNIT=2

What is that activate bit ? Is this correct ?

Which CD-ROM Filesystem are you using ?

G00d question duesi !

I don't know ! 8-)  :-D

I know I suck, but in fact I NEVER used a CD-Rom with a Miggy, that's the reason !

I'm told that OS3.9 sorts this out, I mean namely ships with a proper CD FS, but now, a friend sent me his AsimCDFS setup... I really don't know where to start...

I mean, now I have the 3.1 ROMs, and the 3.1 WB handy, I though (I read someplace that 3.1 is *just* that : A 3.0 with CD "utilities") that it would work out of the box, at least for Scuzzy.

Please, explain the way to go as if I'm 4 years old ;-)

Very interesting, thank you.

this is the sort of info I'm looking for, and hopefully with you help I *will * get the thing to work.

What I have right now in my L: drawer (Floppy-based WB) is

aux-handler
port-handler
queue-handler
CrossDOSFileSystem
FileSystem_Trans
And...
AmiCDFS !

I don't know what's it doing there, I did not copy it myself, those 3.1 disks may have been tampered with after all...

Is this AmiCDFS *part* of the 3.1 WB ?

edderkop, where did you got your "L:CDFileSystem" from ? And where does the value "L:CDFileSystem" come from ?

Thanx

Hey thank you ! I did'nt saw this one, merci !

I'l try this right away. Tu es loin de Paris, JF ?

Amigalement,

pX

PS - Yeah, you must now know that "Amiga" really sounds like "friend" in french, more than in English, since the french word for "friend" is "Ami" (Amie for a girl, sounds the same)

What do you mean regarding the J2 "Pins 1-2 ON" ?

What I have looks like this :

J2
<===front of the machine

|| || || <= jumper on the red ones
|| || ||
|| || ||

Is it OK ? Because I would say this is the opposite of what you said, here it looks "PINS 1-2 OFF", no ? Assuming the Pin #1 is the closest to the front of the 4000, but then again there are some fantasies on Miggy MoBos..

apart from that all jumper settings are as you said.

For J2, it's a tree pins jumper on the GVP scsi card and only the pins 1 and 2 must be jumpered as follow :

this side is pin 1 -->     <1-2 3|

Amigalement,

Jean-François.

Oh, OK, so you are saying that the J2 jumpers are numbered from the front of the MoBo (Floppy side, or where the RAM sockets are on the GVP), right ?

In that case my jumpers settings are wrong.

because Pins 2 and 3 are jumped together, and the 1st one is not.

The reason for this ANOTHER post is just that, Jean-François : Please confirm the numbering of the jumpers from the front of the MoBo

Ahh, I see !

We don't have the same rev of the HC+8 !

Mine has J12 jumpers in-line with the boards. Thanks for the scan.

How can I make an icon file from scratch ? I don't have CD0.info. I suppose it's not difficult to create it/copy it from another file, any pitfalls ?

@all :

It's installed ! Thank you very much !!!

Now the Install CD mounts, it's showing as soon as boot ends. 2 questions :

# Why can't I open the CD tray, like under Linux ? Do I have to manually "unmount" it, or dump it into trash ?

# Why are the credits and readme stuff stupidly tied to OS3.9 - specific apps ? The "WhoDiIt" icon has the "notepad" or something tooltype, and that is NOT smart. Oh well  ;-)

# Is'nt there some sort of "entreprise" license ? I mean intended for large parks of machines, like a renderfarm... Well, it's not expensive, I'm just asking.

On the same level I was considering getting a AOne through my company, to avoid nasty taxes. AND to show the machine in a production environment. Does AINC handle nicely those propositions, like say PalmComputing, who nearly *give* you the machines if you are either a Pro developper, a journalist or a Company buyer, or even a good social engineer 8-)
