Squirrel SCSI CD ROM Drive not working on A1200
« on: February 26, 2008, 12:30:47 AM »
Hi,

Sorry for the long post :-)

I'm having trouble getting my old "Power Computing" CD ROM Drive working on my A1200. It use to work on my old hard drive, but that's failed now so I have had to install a new hard drive with workbench 3.0 (manual install since I don't have the Install disk).

I have a PCMCIA Squirrel adaptor connected to the CD ROM drive. The CR DOM drive has 2 SCSI connectors on the back and some phono sockets for audio in/out and power. I understand that the CD ROM has internal termination so it has to be at the end of the SCSI chain. I have no other SCSI devices so this should be ok. Also the SCSI ID has been hardwired to be 3.

I have booted up my hard drive with workbench 3.0 and then installed the floppy disk that was supplied with the CD ROM drive. The installation copies lots of files etc. The CD ROM drive appears in the SCSI Mounter application as:
Unit: 3
Drive Type: SANYO CRD-250S
Rev: 1.19
Cap: Unknown
Status: not ready

When I select the drive and click on the Mount button, I get the error message "Error: Device not of required type".

So I try re-booting but see no CD0: icon :-(

When I attempt to use the Squirrel tools to mount CD0: I get a message saying it's already mounted! However I can not see or access CD0: via the shell or DOpus.

I have checked the CD0: icon information (SYS:Dev/DOSDrivers) and it is as follows:
ACTIVATE=1
DEVICE=cd.device
UNIT=0
FLAGS=1

I'm running out of ideas. Like I said the drive use to work many years ago on my old hard drive, but since I have installed a new hard drive and loaded Workbench 3.0 onto it I can not get it to work.

Note: I do not have the Workbench 3.0 Install disk, so I had to manually copy the other 5 WB disks to the hard drive. Would this make a difference???

Please help :-(

Apologies for the lenghy post, I wanted to get as much info down to help diagnose the problem.

Yeah, using the original disks that came with CD ROM drive.

I tried changing DEVICE=squirrel.device

still no luck :-(

I don't remember having any other Squirrel disks, just the ones that came with the CD ROM drive.

Update:

I managed to get my old HD to boot up (eventually) and it supports the CD ROM drive as CD0: It works fine (as expected).

So I checked the CD0: icon properties and it's as the default values in my 1st post i.e. UNIT=0 and DEVICE=cd.device

I also checked in the Squirrel SCSI Mounter application and it appears in the list, but has the Capacity and Status as "ready". When running on my new HD, there is no capacity and the Status is "not ready".

So I'm thinking there must be an issue with my new HD Workbench setup. I don't have the Workbench Install disk so I had to manually copy each of the Workbench disks to my HD.

Do you think using the Install disk differs a lot from manually copying the Workbench disks to the HD?
Could it cause the problem I am having?

I've not had a chance to try the Squirrel disk yet.

I'm hoping to get an Install disk and re-install my new HD and then try the CD ROM setup again.

All this is in preparation to install OS 3.5 via CD ROM lol

I'm assuming OS 3.5 can be installed on top of Workbench 3.0???

Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure if OS3.5 can be installed on a clean drive? I was planning to create a boot floopy disk which had support for the CD ROM. If I boot from that and then run through the installation stages, I think it should work on a clean drive?

If not, I've read somewhere that the OS3.5 CD contains WB3.1 so I can install that first and then continue with the other installation steps.

My Kickstart 3.1 ROMS are on order, so will obviously have to wait for them to arrive before installing OS3.5 :-)

I have a 030 accelerator card with 4MB Fast Ram in addition to the 2MB Chip Ram...so hopefully that will be enough?

Not sure if it's worth upgrading...haven't really looked at the options or prices yet.

I'm just waiting for my Kickstart 3.1 ROMs to arrive before I attempt the installation.

I am getting a bit confused though, some people say OS3.5 can be installed on a clean drive and others say you need to install WB3.0/3.1 first.

If I need to install WB3.0 first, then I will need the WB3.0 Install disk. I have all the other original disks, just not the install disk.

I'm thinking how it would be possible to install without a prior installation of WB3.x I guess just having a floppy boot disk with CD ROM support isn't enough? I've heard if I do this, it will not "see" the Hard drive and therefore try to install OS3.5 to the floppy? Can anyone confirm this please?

Thanks :-)
