Netsurf V3.0 Amiga release 2
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:58:33 PM »
has anyone tried this release of NetSurf for 68k yet?

I downloaded it from Aminet, installed it but it doesn't work for me. I'm running it on a CS MKII 060 128MB ram, CV643D, ixemul62.1, AFA_OS.

you dont need 32 bit screen depth anymore with this release. window on 16bit will work too. what doesnt mean it doesnt work? does it open the window?

maybe these fonts are missing:
http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
i think readmes are not quite up to date. copy djavu fonts into progdir/fonts directory.

Indeed correct sir! Installed fonts and woohoo netsurf running fine with a 16bit screen depth. Excellent!

Netsurf is truly awseome for 68k. Ive just installed it on amikit and it works great, not the quickest but at least I can now access CSS web pages, the most important of which for me is  A.Org, and they look like they are meant to.  I can now post to A.org from within a 68k enviroement without having to fire up the peecee. This really is excellent work.

incremental_reflow:1
min_reflow_period:500
max_fetchers:4
max_fetchers_per_host:4
max_cached_fetch_handles:4

please try out on your classic and post values so you reach better performance.
the complete page load is not important only important is that the page is show as soon as possible in correct layout and you can scroll or click on links

I have tried these values (A4000D as per signature) but for me their appears to be only a minor improvement. Page renders 2-3 seconds faster.

bernd its geart to see thebupdates coming thick and fast but this one crashes on my real Amiga. Click on the news tab from the google home page and I am given the option to either suspend or re-boot. The previous version works without any problems. Am I missing something from the install?

@ x303 the link. I've chnaged the netSrf window size to 1024x768 from 800x600 and since then I've not been able to replicate the crash I got when I first installed the new version.

@ bernd_AFA the fast scrollign is really great. its a big improvement. However, when I try to post to A.Org I can't use the scroll arrow in the box to post my comment (I'm using my peecee to make this post as my A4000D has just frozen). This also happened when using the old version of NetSurf. Also the Scroll arrows don't always show but I can pian them in by drawing the pointer over them sevral times.

Can you tell if netsurf  launches faster now ?

I don't detect much difference from the previous version. Scrolling is alot faster and makes browsing a whole better experience. But start-up doesn't appear to be any faster.

Also can't download from Aminet - netSurf says "please insert volume Amikit in any drive". Old version works without problems.

I dont know how installer work, but the installer should ask if the option file should install.
most users have own options and the settings need change for a classic to get faster speed.

>But start-up doesn't appear to be any faster.

normaly netsurf start very fast.I get report that it show on a classic after 6 sec the startpage.what time you get ?

I get around the same 6-7 seconds. Start-up time for the most recent version and the previous one is aroudn the same. I don't detect any difference between the two versions.

@Artur - thanks for pointing out need to change the options file to set the download path. What other settings can I fiddle with in the options file other than screen size? Can I change the quick link buttons to show a different picture for each website? ie if I change the link in the options file for favourite_1 to http://www.bloomberg.com, how can I change the picture in NetSurf?

there need a 16 bit screen.

can somebody post time values of show and scroll from top to down of the http://www.amigaworld.net Page by press of Cursor keys ?

Here are values that look really slow

Bernd,

It took about 20s to follow the link to amigaworld.net and dislay the page. However when I scroll the page is corrupted (it becomes a mixture of A.org and amigaworld.net). This happens quite a bit when I follow links from A.Org.

A general observation is that Netsurf in a 800x600 window on a WB of 800x600, both betsurf and WB at 16bit is much slower than when I set the resolution of both at 1024x768 with 16 bit depth.

Running netsurf at 800 width is slower than at 1024, the clipping explains it.

I find now out that netsurf scroll is 3* faster when use 32 bit.if you use 16 bit wb, then this setting can help to start netsurf in fullscreen mode.

best is when user let run netsurf on 32 bit.

its much faster. Only problem is my LCD monitor doesn't support the frequency I get from P96 and my CV64 3D in 32 bits. Best I can get is 800x600 32 bit.

maybe you can create a custom resolution 1024*650 or so when your GFX Card have 4 megabyte ram.

But i see that a CV64 3D have 4 megabyte of ram and is able to do 1024*768*32 bit at 70 hz.

http://www.softhut.com/cgi-bin/test/Web_store/web_store.cgi?page=catalog/hardware/accelerators/phase5_cybervision.html&cart_id=

If gfx Card have 2 megabyte ram, you can maybe create a resolution 1024*400*32 bit.

Bernd thanks for this. The most i can get at 1024x768 @ 32 is 54.89 MHz. How can I find out how much memory is on the CV64-3D without opening up the box?

I've only tried a 1024x768 non-pc 16bits screenmode, and with a netsurf window of 1024x768 scrolling is slow again.

Scrolls fastest  for me using a 1024 x 768 16 bit screen mode with NetSurf Window set to 1024 x 768. Setting NetSurf window to 800 x 600  slows scrollijg down considerably due to the clipping required.

The new version of NetSurf doesn't work for me.
I have set it to appear in its own screen and this works with version 1.3. In this one, it opens a black window in the WorkBench screen, the navigation bar appears very messed up after a couple of second and then it crashes.

Are you using the same settings that you were using for 1.3? I did clean install of 1.4 (ie haven't tweaked the settings at all) and 1.4 runs fine.

1.4 looks nicer in terms of GUI but I don't think its any faster in terms of page loading etc. t least not on my 060 A4000D.
