such a device already exists. it is called an in-circuit emulator.

doesn't seem too expensive... I'm not sure what the onboard cpu is for - maybe there is a fallback mode???

All of this discussion sounds almost exactly like AmiJoe. Anyone know whatever happened to this project. It seemed pretty far along. Maybe someone would want to continue working on it...
