A4000 and CV64/3D
« on: February 08, 2007, 03:31:17 PM »
Well, I finally got my A4000. It is a Rev. B, SuperBuster 11, A3640 version 3.1. This is my first 4000, and I gotta say that it sure isn't built like my 2000...

Anyway, I moved my brand new CV64/3D that I got from Software Hut from my A2000 to the 4000. It is made by DCE, and I've heard that there are problems with it on ZIII bus, but I thought that the Buster 11 would fix that?

The board shows as working on the early startup menu. I tried running it with CGX3, CGX4, and P96, and every time the monitor driver is started, it Gurus with 8000 0004... Is there anything else I can do, besides getting one made by Phase 5?

I tried all the slots, and did use the CGX3 floppies that came with the board, to no avail. I don't think I want to be using CGX2 though :) A little too old...

rrete: Got ya, I will try it, but the board I got did come with disks. Anyway, at this point I am willing to try anything :)

Darrin: CV64/3D should work with no problems on ZII bus. Sounds to me like CGX3 might not like OS 3.9 maybe. I would definitely install Picasso96 or CGX4 (then remember to update it with 42R6 from Aminet) If right now the machine is not booting, just hold both mouse button to get into the early startup menu, then choose Start with No Startup Sequence - just make sure that you are connected to the standard Amiga video. You can then remove the CVision monitor file from Devs/Monitors, and reboot.

rrete: Thank you for making me try it again, it works!! I took the A4000 completely apart, cleaned everything, then put it back together, re-partitioned and re-formated the HD, and put a clean WB 3.1 on it. I then used the original CGX3 disks that came with the CV64/3D, and it worked like a charm. I then upgraded to CGX4.3, and it has been working ever since.

As far as the speed though, I'm a little underwhelmed. I assumed that Zorro III and 040/25 would give a nice speed boost over my A2000 with 030/50. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be any faster. I haven't really tried very high resolutions at 24-bit, but 800x600x16 seems to be just a tad faster. It's not slow by any means, but makes me wish I could try a Cybervision PPC on a PPC accelerator board :)
