Is Vampyre not completely compatible?
« on: November 04, 2017, 12:53:01 PM »
Hello,

I am using a Rev. 6A with a Gotek floppy drive.
I have connected the Vampyre and everything seems ok, apart that some "old" games do not start... but I supposed this is a "minor" compatibility issue (Startglider, Defender of the crown and many others are ok!)
I then connected a two position 44pin cable with a CF and a slim CD-ROM everything seems ok. CF on the first connector as master and CD-ROM on the second connector as low (slave).
I have installed OS3.1 from the Gotek and now I am trying to install OS3.9 but... some programs from the CD do not start! I can see the CD and I can even copy it all on the CF.
Most of the programs are ok but, for example, I cannot start the Installer from the CD (and so I cannot start the setup program).
I had also some problems when I copied some programs (AmiCDROM, LHA) with a "true" floppy, using an A1010.
I was able to copy all of them but some did not work. I tried to RENAME some and then they worked!!! For example I was not able to decompress "Installer-43_3.lha" but it was ok when renamed INST.LHA.
In other cases this trick did not worked.
I haven't done extensive tests to see if there are some rules...
I initially supposed this was related to the fact I was using a DOS 720 kb formatted floppy drive to transfer files... but then I arrived to issue of the CD-ROM!

Can somebody help?

Thank you

@flaviosr

I did go trough all the trouble of building my own OS3.9 vampire install.
But since connecting or even having a CD ROM player connected to my A600 was too much trouble and a hassle for me to even try.
I did my base OS3.1 and then OS3.9 install in WinUAE.
So after I installed OS3.9 with BB1+BB2 via WinUAE i moved the CF to the A600 so I could setup a network connection and download whatever i need.

Making a small summary:
° IT IS possible to connect two IDE devices (in my case a CF and a CD-ROM slim);
° Apollo is not anyway supporting this solution and there could be some issues (and I have personally seen them).

Open streets and things to do/test:
° I am so bringing outside the case the IDE through an external CF reader and the micro SD through an extender cable connected to a SD reader (hoping to have in the future a good support of the microSD);
° are IDE splitters supported by Vampire? I was thinking about using one:
  1. primary line => primary HD (the famous CF)
  2. secondary line => the CD-ROM + generic CF reader (to move big amount of data)
  Question: could this be hot swap? :)
° what about internet?
  I have read about using USB but they are not easy nor cheap to find.
  An Amiga 2000 could make the thing easier but now I would like to reach the goal to have an Amiga 500 working at best.
  And yes... An Amiga 600 or 1200 could be even better from this point of view since they have PCMCIA... but I would like crazy ideas for my Amiga 500! :)

Answering to myself?!?!? :hammer:

I have posted the original request also to the Apollo forum and I was looking too see if I had any answers (none!)... but I have found the following 3D:
http://forum.apollo-accelerators.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1703 :roflmao:
Interesting for many things... expecially for the Plipbox (I forgot about it!!!).

Any other ideas or new?

There is a Micro SD card slot on Vampire. You could copy the AmigaOS 3.9 CD content on the card and use SDmount from the Saga driver package and you can install AmogaOS 3.9.

I am quite blockhead. I have just bought a 4×EIDE'99 Buffered Interface.
Now my more than crazy idea is to use the primary IDE channel for TWO IDEtoCF (I have to find a way to put them on the back of the Amiga) and the secondary IDE channel for the CD-ROM and... now I have to find a slim LS120! :)
And a clockport interface for A500... but one step near the other!

@soviet

He got the help he needed. To install ApolloOS. flaviosr had an official copy of OS3.9 he just couldn't get the CD install working on a A500 + Vampire. SpeedD408 who offered the advice clarified that he too had an official OS3.9 copy so everything is fine. I doubt everyone on the Apollo-core forum is so honest. Maybe there should be a requirement to insert an original CD-ROM during the install process to dispel the reputation of ApolloOS as a pirate's dream?

I hope I have found the help I am needing now.
And yes, I have an original copy of OS3.1, OS3.5 and OS3.9 (also older OSes).
I have tested Apollo-OS to see my Vampire working (my fear was to have a bad card). Now I am waiting some new stuff from AmiKit and I hope I will be able to have a "bad girl Amiga"! :)
I have also other Amiga and I could have used a copy of their OS3.9 but Apollo-OS is pre configured for Vampire and the test have been much more easier.
I hope to have a DVD, two CF, an LS-120 (to be found), the SD and I hope also to add USB and Ethernet! :) A big project and, I have to be true, Apollo-OS solved many of my doubts! If I get some results I post them while I make steps...

@flaviosr or anyone else:  Did you get the 4xEIDE'99 working with the Vampire?
I asked in another thread:
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72877&highlight=EIDE%2799

got a couple responses

I see from your thread that a guy have been able to use 4xIDE99 with an Amiga 2000.
I just ordered the card from Amikit and... they are terribly sloooooooowwww...
Order one week ago it has not yet been shipped.
As soon as I have it I give a feedback.

A small update.
I finally received my new 99xEIDE card.
I installed the "primary" CF on the primary IDE44 connector and a CD as master and a CF as slave on the secondary IDE40 connector.
At first I tried my old 99xEIDE drivers, simply since I had them in ADF and I could load them with the Gotek emulator... no results and I hanged the Amiga. :(
I then used the NEW driver and now the CD is working and I have been able to install OS3.9!!!
And the issues I had with files loaded from the floppy (real floppy) now seem disappeared.
It's only strange that the preference program do see the second CF but I cannot see it working! :(
And that I have some problems loading some OS3.9 programs...

More info to follow!

Woooooo... finally I got it!!! In my previous tests I was not able to see the second CF on the second channel (as a secondary device of the CD-ROM).
So I decided to reinstall AmigaOS 3.1 from the scratch so also installing the newest EIDE'99 drivers (I previously installed the newer drivers over older ones).
And now everything seems to be the right way...
Now the difficult part... "rework" the case of the Amiga to fit everything!
