About the New set of Specs from ACK and AInc.
« on: May 07, 2007, 09:25:39 PM »
I saw the announcement with the specs for the Power Design system from AInc and ACK.  It sounds impressive and the like.

One thing has me bothered though:  The price tag of $1500.

The only reason I am pointing this out is that last year for the video production business I have, we put together the following:

2 AMD Opteron Sledgehammer 246 processors, 2.0Ghz each
Tyan motherboard for said processors
2 GB Kingston DDR2 RAM
AGP 8x Video Card (Model Escapes me)
80 GB HD and a 160 GB Hitachi HD
Enermax 550 watt power supply
Case, fans and various sundries

In the neighborhood of $1200.  That was for a system once we put it together and tossed the OS on it was ready to go.

So the question I have is the following:  What do we think of the system spec and the price for said spec?

You are right there.  I priced out Macs as an alternative to the PC-based systems I am using.  I damn near cried and screamed like a baby.

Don't forget that it's been said that it will be a complete system and not just a motherboard..

As we all know, pre-built systems are always more expensive... But if it looks and performs as sweet as it sounds I'm getting one of those babies!

I must have missed the sentence about them being a complete system sans monitor.

Prebuilt systems are not always more expensive.  I've priced out several systems where I could not beat out the price on something ready made.

I find ACK's lack of a website disturbing...

And I have to agree with the statement about not putting out press releases when you have nothing to show for it.  With the history of the post Commodore Amiga, it just does sound like more vapourware.

I understand the point about comparing apples to oranges on mass produced hardware vs. more niche hardware.  The only reason I did that is because in the minds of many, that is how they will see it.
