You probably installed them backward. That can damage the board. I would make sure you have chips installed with the notch or dimple on the chip facing the PCMCIA slot. Take a look at this photo. No, There is only one rom in the 500. They are not compatible. Also try switching the chips to make sure you have them in the right socket.
