My experience with my USR 56k Sportster was I got the best results using baudbandit.device.  I do not recall if I used 38,400 or 19,200.  On a faster machine I was able to run 57,600, and you will definitely be able to run faster if you use a real serial card (ASDG, for instance.)

This is entirely false.  You would likely be surprised at the number of people still on dial-up for one reason or another, the use of modems for secure transaction and "cash-less" system backups, and so on.
