Apple now have the holy grail of Operating Systems... one single system that is scalable from a handheld up to a server.

That, I think, is the true importance of this device...

Never heard of Windows, Linux, etc.?

Linux is just a Kernel, there is no real standardisation above it, for developers on the Mobile platform.

Windows CE is not the same as Windows. It's a different operating system with a similar API to Win32. but Win32 (and certainly not Win64... WinFX or whatever they call it now) apps are not binary comaptible with WinCE on the x86.

MacOSX on this phone it´s not binary compatible with Macosx on desktop either

But MacOSX is binary comaptible on the SAME CPU... please read what I typed more carefully, i.e. WindowsXP and WindowsCE have different ABIs.

Trying to figure out how MacOSX on the iPhone being binary incompatible with MacOSX on desktop is any different than Windows XP not being binary compatible with Windows PocketPC or Smartphone?

No. My point was that WindowsCE is not related to the WindowsNT software. They share nothing in common. When you run WindowsCE on the SAME CPU as WindowsNT the software is not interchangeable. Microsoft did not just recompile WindowsNT for mobile devices.

And iPhone is not related to OSX software.  :-?  I still don't get your point.  The CPUs aren't the same on the iPhone and desktop Macs, the OS isn't the same, so where's the "holy grail"?

If you take time to watch the Keynote, Jobs explains that OSX was choosen simply to save time and effort; and he deails the features of OSX that apple deemed make is suitable for a handheld device, plus the ability to use a few "core services" (standard in OSX) which allowed the construction of an "Apple User Interface/Experience".

If you read about the Mach Kernel I think you'll find it is quite a good choice for a Mobile device!

I suspect the iPhone uses an embeded PPC, that kind of CPU would be ideal for such a device... though I would probably choose one of the MIPS devices... but apple might have got a sweet deal on XScales from intel (even though they don't own the core assets anymore).

The "Holy Grail"? Amiga Inc. tried to promote it... one OS from mobile device to server... It's a nice idea, if creates a consistant devloper interface and allows scalling across platforms... it also means the OS developers only have one code base to work from, bugs get fixed quicker and new features become readily available for different versions.

Sources suggest that the iPhone does indeed use an ARM CPU... though not the Xscale, they have gone with Samsung, who supply the iPod's ARM CPU... I'm not surprissed about the use of an ARM, and I'll bet Apple get a sweet deal from Samsung by shifting such lage numbers... but I didn't know Samsung had a powerful enough chip in their product range, time to research!

-Edit- Wikipedia calims a Cortex-A8, which would be powerful enough!
