OS4.1 installed on my 4000/csppc/mediator
« on: July 02, 2011, 06:02:13 AM »
Woo hoo!

Just installed os4.1 on my A4000 in a mediator tower tonight. typing this on OWB and just had to tell....someone!

Surprisingly after i set up the cf's with sfs and formatted them,it was just a matter of booting the install floppy/cdrom which worked on the radeon as is,i didnt have to do anything other than set the res in sys:prefs/screenmode to what i wanted. no mediator driver sillyness to install like under 3.9.
other than that i started the tcp/ip install and picked the rtl8029 driver and quieried the card and it found it,entered my ips/gateway etc manually and i was online.

Most of this stuff works fine and other than the mediator drivers etc its prettyclose to the old os4x install.

I have not mapped any radeon ram to the os,not sure if i will. i will say this, the zoram with 256MB is probabaly a necessity if you do much in OWB.

My Machine Configuration:

A4000 desktop board in the mediator pro tower
Cyberstorm ppc 604e/233 060/60 128MB ram
Zoram board with 256MB that just came in from amigakit(why are these so damn expensive!?)
Sapphire radeon 9250 i got new off ebay for $15..128MB ver.(it works in +5 or 3.3v mediators) my mediator is 5v.
2-32gb kingston pro cf cards adopted to the cyberstorm UWscsi with acard AEC-7720UW scsi/ide adapters.the cf's are the ones i've been running for 5+ yrs.
Deneb usb(havent installed drivers yet!)
rtl8029aas ethernet card(i hate i cant use my 100Mbit card with fastethernet.device!)
SB128
HD floppy
Dvd burner also adopted to the scsichain with the 7720uw.

So far everything is running well,i am using 1600x900 in 32bit res on workbench and its pretty nice.
OWB seems to work well, its not blistering fast but no worse than ibrowse speed wise. its nice to have a useable css browser but i already miss ibrowse download manager.

Has anyone got the sata card to work or was that not for the classics??
I havent' installed it yet but its on the list to try tomorrow.

we need a driver for the fastethernet.device..hint hint ;)

if anyone cares, this was the radeon i got off ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160603380919&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_5978wt_911

it worked right out of the box.

I will try and report more on this thread as i get stuff going,i think thats enough for tonight.:rtfm:

Well, there is the option of using the deneb with a usb dongle. but yes, currently there is only the 10Mbit nic. hopefully we will see some drivers for the 100Mbit one soon.
i agree with you this was the single most annoying thing about 4.1 for me as well going in.

I would recommend a Silicon Image 3512 based card.  It works in my A4000 which is nearly same setup as yours.  You'll just have to get a 5V card.  I got a couple cheap ones at a local computer store and they worked.

As for the Sapphire, yes, that's the best card, it works in all types of Mediators, good you found one :)  The only downside is that it has separate memory banks so AmigaOS 4.1 will only see the first 128MB of a 256MB card.  Anyway 128MB gfx ram should be enough...

Glad you are up and running :)

Thanks!
I actually have the SIL3114 card working in mine, its a 4 port card.
I never had a rtl8039,i was using a SMC1211TX card for 100Mbit under my old os3.9 ..
the sapphire i got was a 128MB version.. would of been nice to have a 256MB one,but seems hit and miss from what i read.

btw, any idea how to find the zoram 256MB i've added? doesnt seem to show in the other mem.
