I've always had pretty good luck recovering fried ffs partitions with disksalv, which is an Aminet download.

I've heard of ppl hooking up ide/scsi drives to a win machine, though only for use with UAE. I believe Linux has nataive FFS/OFS filesystems, and can access Amiga partitions directly, but I'm not sure if theres any decent recovery/salvage programs that'll work under linux. I'm not too sure if UAE emulates the hardware access to the controller enough for disksalv to work, either, I've never tried it. (My xp machine is a laptop, and my wife gets nervous if I get within 10 feet of her computer with a screwdriver) I know its possible with "healthy" partitions w/ UAE or linux, though.

Unfortunatly, UAE can't write to Amiga floppy disks due to limitations in PC floppy controller hardware. I think your best bet would be to download proggy off of Aminet, save it to a 720K DD floppy (Put scotch tape over the hole on the upper-left side of the floppy before formatting, thats the hole without the write protect tab, this will force windows into seeing it as a DD floppy instead of HD, and if you can format it on the Amiga it tends to be a bit more reliable), and copy it to your Amiga using Crossdos (I belive its included in AOS 2.x and up, it'll be the PC0: device in sys:storage/dosdrivers, either type mount pc0: or double click its icon, and the Amiga will be able to read 720K PC-Floppys, though unless you have the right version, the filenames will have the original dos 8.3 length) and use lha x -x pc0: ram: (or wherever you want the program) to unpack the file. Then just double click the disksalv icon, the menu should show your dh2: partition, and give you several options in a drop menu. (undelete, salvage, repair, etc...) I would recommend salvage, which will allow you to save your game files to a good partition/floppy disk, and then try a repair after that if you like. Or just try to re-format after you salvage all your important data. If you don't have crossdos, you can possibly transfer the file across a null-modem cable using a terminal program. (There's several for Amiga, windows typically has hyperterm, which supports zmodem and works will with all the Amiga term proggys I've played with, TERM 4.7 being my favorite)

also, if you just want to stick to UAE, you need a scsi controller in the PC, and I belive there's a device driver for uae to access it directly, though it probably defaults to the pc's IDE interface. (Useful for A600/A1200/A4000 drives as those have IDE, though use the laptop size drives, though I'm not sure with the 4000 about that), but as soon as everything is configured and UAE can see the drive, disksalv might be able to salvage the info off of it. I believe there's a few threads on this forum about hooking physical amiga drives to UAE.

after you mount pc0: (either with the icon in storage/dosdrivers or by typing mount pc0:) you need to format pc0:. df0: will still attempt to access the disk as an Amiga floppy, pc0: will access it as a PC floppy. if you get the pc0:??? icon on workbench, you can select it and choose format from the menu, otherwise you can type "format drive pc0: name You can do this on the Amiga without the tape, but when you put it into the pc, you'll need the tape on it or it'll try tto access the 720k disk as a 1.44 mb disk. Transparent tape should work fine, though I should warn you that long-term, the floppy won't be to reliable that way. (1.44mb disks don't like being formatted as 720k, though for 1 or 2 file transfers it should work fine) anyway, I gotta go to work, so hopefully the guy from the UK who's been posting in here can help you out a bit more if yyou have any more problems.

Hello again, got back from work a few hours ago, and figured I'd check this thread (since I checked the notification option and got a ton of e-mail about it :-D) Nce to see everything got hammered out, and I hope disksalv works for you! I would have checked earlier, but my wife found "I want a hippopotomus for christmas" on youtube, and I spent 2 hours using the latest getvideo script on Aminet and FFMPEG to convert it into .mp3 so she can play it for my daughter. I'm guessing thats 2 hours I'll soon regret spending.... Just wanted to mention how great it is to see Amiga users unite and support each other like this. :-D Anyway, I've been to Valletta, Malta in 2001, had a blast there. Still the party island I (barely) remember it as?
