what camera you use depends on what you are going to do with your finshed film.

showing a film in a theater really needs 35mm film stock to look good. Or an HD camera

however, these days you can show your work (or parts of it) on youtube. or other web sites.

I know a guy that made a film with a handheld camera. Don't ask me which model because I wasn't there when he did it. But It was all digital. camera, editing, everything.

in terms of price that's the best way to go. I did much of the special effects for his film and he gave me files in the divx format. That way the quality did not degrade. I saved in the divx format so when the editor dropped the effects files in the edited footage it would match.

If you pay attention to details your work can look surprisingly good dispite the relativly low price of the equiptment. And digital cameras are sensative to light in a way that film cameras are not. Educate yourself about that before you start shooting with actors.

the good things about digital cameras of course is that there's no huge overhead on film stock. In fact I would spend lots of time making tests. Shooting in all sorts of lighting situations and making experiments. That way, once you get with the actors there are fewer surprises.

What matters is not the camera. and ok camera will do fine. What you need is a good script, a talented director and an experienced crew.

these people made a film :

and these people:
http://www.youtube.com/user/sillyweefilms

made a science fiction series.
their main site is here:  http://www.nightisday.com/
and they seem to be selling DVD's of this series which is now in it's 2nd series. No kidding.

and it appears to have not cost much. Somewhere on the site he's got more details about pricing. From what I have seen the  main actor is Spectular, the story is quite interesting and the direction sometimes is a bit irritating, but I can't stop looking. Which is a good sign!

See, it's already being done! Obviously you need a bunch of people whp are willing to play along. Making a film is a team efforts.

The Av is a still from one of the projects I did. It is "From the Earth to the Moon" and was on HBO. And, yes, it was about the moon missions including Apollo. I made some of the effects. There must have been a good 100 people at least doing effects. The whole series cost about 60 million dollars.

google the title and pick up the DVD pronto. It's an incredible series. (no, I don't make any residuals, unfortunately). As my colleague used to say, special effects (artists) are the bottom of the food chain.

In any case I consider this one of the highest moments of my career.

Tuesday, I am going to work on modeling the saturn V.
I found a drawing on Wikipedia.org.
When my colleagues Tony Alderson and Mike Hoover were creating the Saturn Rocket it took them months. Not so much the modeling, but the textures. Tony and Frank (his business partner) went out to the parking lot and took pictures of the cement to use as texture maps.

Tony has to make these two shots of the Rocket on the launchpad as seen from a birds eye view. And they were Magnificent! They only stay on the screen for a few moments but took months to do. Tony was Very particular. And it shows.
