FreeDO 3DO emulator finally goes Open Source!
« on: November 12, 2010, 07:40:48 PM »
From what I understand, this machine was designed by a bunch of the same guys who designed the Amiga, if this is the case, I can not see a reason why such an emulator shouldn't be ported to AmigaOS, MorphOS, and AROS...

I guess it's also GCC which is Amiga friendly right?

If we had 200Mhz 680x0's (like the Atari community seems to have) then we just "might" be able to run this, considering it was originally planned for release on the Sega Dreamcast.

Not so not so. The 3DO's library consisted of a lot more than mere ports. There were many titles that released on the 3DO alone. Also there were a few titles that were on other systems, but paled in comparison to the 3DO version, I.E. Road Rash and Po'ED.

There was Slayer, then they later released Death Keep. I think if you get that chance to play them that you'll find your self liking Death Keep the best between the two.

I also really enjoyed playing Alone in the Dark part 1 on there, as I believe this was the only console that that game ever made it to, which was ironic as that games still stands (in my opinion) as the best in the series.

I believe it was the 3DO port of Flashback that featured the hi-resolution graphics which didn't grace the PC till much later. And of course there were a few RPG's on the 3DO that I loved playing, though I forget the name of the one I played the most...

Speaking of which did anyone ever get a chance to play Lost Eden? Was it any good?

Hey, at least I didn't suggest a Phillips CDi Emulator...

Though it did have those three crappy Zelda games... :)

One of these babies plus AROS 68k would be very sexy!

The Coldfire project, drool!

Atari users are lucky! :)

This emulator is pretty heavy though, I doubt OS4.x hardware is up to the task. Higher end Macs (ie. Morphos) might just manage (although it wouldnt be great for a lot of stuff). Only AROS really has the hardware grunt for FreeDO (Win port requires roughly a 2ghz athlon xp if I recall correctly, with an athlon64 the minimum target for a good experience from most games, both of which are significantly more powerful than any available desktop ppc systems)).

I wonder how the heck they ever imagined they'd get this running on the original XBOX? That was their original plan back in the day.

Speaking of Another World aka Out of this World, I wonder why no one ever seems to bring up Heart of the Alien and the fact that there is an Open Source Redux of it out on the web?

This was ported to BeOS, but sadly I've not yet been able to get it to run under Haiku. It would be great to see it on Amiga OS 4, MorphOS, AROS and the like...
