How Do I test to see what ROM I have, and do I need to upgrade?

Exactly as the title reads. How do I know what I got by looking at the chip?

I have a 1200, so if I have 3.0 roms, do I need them, considering I'll be getting the Coldfire, and I guess it has a work around for that?
