Quite frankly, the only surprise i want is OS4.0 beta running on a dev board. All the rest isn't important.

I don't think you'll get to see that in Toulouse. I'm not sure whether the AOS4 kernel is ready yet - though I suspect not - and unless everything has also been ported to PPC and the new kernel, you'd need the 68k emulation in place, whcih would be a problem because Petunia is unlikely to be anywhere near a state of completion to perform that role.

To reply, I'd first have to point you to The Petunia benchmark thread on ANN. Read comments 17, 20 and 25 from Bernd Meyer, and the reply in comment 38 from Álmos Rajnai.

Based on his own previous experience, Mr. Meyer privately thinks it unlikely that Petunia will be fully functional before the end of this year at the earliest, and while neither he or I know exactly how Petunia is progressing, I'm tempted to trust in his experience and assume that he won't be far wrong. (Notice that this is his private opinion, and should not be used to start another FUD flamefest,)

Ah the wonders of the English language. Bill H meant Bernd Meyer was posting his personal opinion as a private individual.

Slight correction: I was posting Bernd Meyer's personal opinion, so if anyone is to be flamed for it, it's me.

For me, the fact that this was his personal opinion mentioned in private e-mailand not posted to the Net, only serves to strengthen my belief that it is a honest assessment, and not a politically motivated one.

It runs some integer only binaries now, binaries which have a certain type of code. That's what the thread on ANN was about, and why I posted those references.

As long as the JIT emulator gets a majority of 68k OS-compliant software to run, it will suffice for the initial release.

Absolutely, but I don't believe it has reached that stage yet, nor does Mr. Meyer.  You are free to believe whatever you want, of course.

I don't know when OS4 will be available, it appears to be at least around August as far as I can see.

If you think you will get AOS4 in August, be my guest. In my view, even if AOS4 was fully functional now, a proper OS beta-testing cycle would mean an autumn release at best. Since I don't believe that the kernel is finished yet, I suspect AOS4 will take even longer to be released, not even counting any Petunia induced delays. And that is my personal opinion, of course.  ;-)
