I really, really don't understand the rampant paranoia regarding Facebook.  Yes.  If you do stupid stuff and post about it (bragging), people will see you.

NOTHING wants "control of your computer".  Games and facebook apps simply need access to your FACEBOOK ACCOUNT in order to fill in the blanks of their own data, such as your birthdate, etc.

Use it wisely, play the games, and get away from it.  All I can say is that it's been quite helpful in keeping in touch with old friends and schoolmates.

Wouldn't touch MySPACE with your "10 foot pole", and I find others like linkedin useful, but kinda boring.

Guess all you paranoid ninnies are glad I didn't install the "Facebook theme" eh?

Psst... I'll let you in on a little secret...

There are already OTHER ways to keep in contact with old friends!!!

One is called an 'instant messenger', the other an amazing invention called 'email' and the third is a devilishly clever piece of electronic trickery called a 'telephone'!

:-)

Wow.  A snide comment.  I guess Amiga.org really *is* coming back to life.. :)

Seriously though, since the average age of the current Amiga community member falls below the age during which Commodore even existed, I doubt most of you are even old enough to understand when I say that when you've been out of school 25 years and have NO way to contact them via "IM" or "e-mail", then something like Facebook does indeed come in handy for re-establishing contacts.

Some of the people I now talk to are in different parts of the country, even different parts of the world, and it would be neigh impossible to find them otherwise.

But thanks for the wise-ass comment, makes me feel like I should step in for your daddy who obviously should have smacked you harder as a child..

@Jose,

Yes, but if you haven't seen or heard from a friend in 25 years, and as is the case with old girlfriends, they now have different last names, how do you find them via the phone or other means?

I'm not saying you would ONLY use FB or another means to stay in touch, but I'm now talking with old girlfriends from different freaking states who would be impossible to find if they hadn't seen me on Facebook first.

Matter of fact, I'm *still* searching for THE "one that got away", and I guarantee you that I'll never find her via e-mail or a phone.

The problem with Facebook is a) it's maddening that people add you, when in reality, you really weren't friends back in the day and b) the people you *REALLY* want to talk to, aren't on there.

Sorry for the short response, but I totally agree. That's the only downside for me.

I've got one guy from elementary and middle school who's constantly talking to me now.  The only memory I have is of this guy is him constantly being a bully and trying to pick a fight.  Took many a paddling and near suspension from whipping his ass, let me tell you, but it was always him starting crap trying to prove that he was the tough guy.

Didn't help that I was 6' tall by age 12 though.  I was always the kid that all the prisoner daddies told their punk ass kids to "find and beat up on the first day of school so nobody messes with you".

Also, the target of the football team for pretty much the same reason.  I was always the calm "talk your way out of it" guy but them starting s**t with me didn't always work to their advantage once I'd had enough...
