1. No problems with SMBFS here either. Using SMBFS 1.63 and Samba 2.0.7, with MiamiDX.
Are you sure you have both Samba and your TCP/IP stack set up correctly?
2. Never tried with special chrs in the computer name, but I would have expected some chrs are OK like underscore. Spaces in machine names are a bad thing.
3. I have accessed windows 95 and 98 machines, but didn't have much luck with an XP box. Probably due to the way it does encrypted passwords, but I couldn't be arsed messing with windows to try and sort it out.
4. Running MiamiDX 24/7 here and SMBFS can connect at any time with no problems.
5. Haven't had a problem with 1.63. Are you using the "break" command to stop SMBFS? Make sure all references and assigns to any mounted volumes or devices are removed before stopping SMBFS.
6. SMBFS usually starts with no problems, and usually just connects unless there is a problem at the remote machine.
As it's a b*tch to set up properly, feel free to copy my live Samba setup and any other bits you want from here:
