They must have been running short on parts.  The one I have uses a shaft of steel that was machined into a ball at the bottom.

Hmmm, maybe they ran short on parts on mine...  Mine doesn't have any rubber inside, just a steel shaft.

Mine is set up to use gravity to self center.  The stick and top of the joystick are flat so the weight of the stick self centers it.

No, no rubber at all, hard plastic on hard plastic.  Not much room between each.  I guess so it centers properly.  The cuff is very long, between the stick plastic and the casing plastic, then after that, just steel.

I might take a pic just so you can see it, since I can't describe it very well.
