Not Happy with the Xsurf
« on: January 24, 2004, 05:14:15 AM »
Its been an uphill battle with this Xsurf. I ordered from Software Hut and it took almost a month to get it. Their web site says they have it in stock but they were back ordered. They did ship and I recieved it yesterday.

What they dont tell you......and I will leave THEY open as I dont know if it Xsurf or SH  but they do not tell you that you need a cdrom to make it easy. They also dont tell you that you need 8-10 megs of space on your sys: drive.

I dont have either. I managed to zip the cdrom install and null modem it over to the amiga.

I run the script and you need this installed and that installed yet its not included on the disk and theres no straight set of directions. The directions state to run the install and away you go.

And I quote......

" Start the installation script from the included cd by clicking on its icon and follow the instructions on the screen. The IDE-drivers and all necessary files will be installed on your computer automatically"

It doesnt give you any instructions to follow it just rips through a script giving our error this and error that and thats the end of it.

The board itself did plug in and the testboard program ran just fine and showed the board is good to go.

Its on an Amiga 3000 with the WorkBench 38.35  with system 2.1

I bought the 3000 off ebay and didnt get any 2.1 disks so canning the harddrive isnt an option right now.

I guess I need install for dummies directions. I have 11 computers in my room here. Novell,2000 server, dos and windows and this thing has just left me frustrated.

I gather I need Miami or AmiTCP which I guess would be the TCP/IP portion?!?!   Where do I find this?  A search on aminet gets me a zillion add on files but I cannot seem to find the actualy file to unpack and install.

Thanks!

What are the MIAMI and AmiTCP directories that came on the xsurf cd for? Is that files used by the Xsurf for those packages?!?!

Well I am still batting zero. My lharc isnt new enough to unpack all the files with the new compression. Downloaded what appeared to be the latest copy on aminet and its not good enough either. I have gensis now just cant unpack it!

OK so can someone verify for me then..........

Miami,AmiTCP and Genesis are all tcp/ip stack programs. One of them is needed to make an amiga get on the internet. And NONE of them are free on the internet? Something else that you need to buy along with the Xsurf to make things work that they dont tell you about?!

I went to the site that had the genesis and they talk of a "demo" version but when I went to get it all I could find were upgrades from 2.1 2.2 and 2.3 and no complete demo package?!?!

I understand the rom and os upgrades. By the time I get all this I will have 600$ into it. Coulda bought a nice Pentium machine and run an emulator. :(

I think the biggest thing that burns me is they dont tell you this when selling the card.

Thanks for the help there Patrik. I downloaded as you said and got MUI and Miami installed.  The Xsurf install script just flys by spitting out error after error. When looking the script it appears it should be asking me questions but it never gives me the option to answer anything it just rips through the script and exits. I am gonna look at it on paper and see if I can manually do it.

Well trying to watch the script as it runs and following it on paper it appears to not be finding some commands it needs?!?!  Am I missing some commands on this 3000 I bought off ebay. Perhaps I have a system with a limp?! Not part of 2.1?

The script is supposed to ask me questions. It does not ask a thing. It rips right through it and ends.

One command up from its calling for is env:tcpchoice
env:proceed
env:tcpchoice
env:tcpstack
17 commands it calls for in the script area. At the very end of the scrip it has

echo"Exiting"

delete >nil: env:proceed

And all the other commands it called for?!?!

I find no place in the script where it copys these commands to the env:  ?!?!?!?! So is my system lame and not putting commands into ENV: at boot up?

I cannot find these commands anywhere on the HD or install cd of the xsurf.

Thanks! Its working now! I had tried to manually install the drivers but I messed up one part! Its using the Miamiping right now and pinging my web site.

Now the next question is where to obtain a registration code for Miami! I went to nordicgloabal and most of the links no longer exist.

Well I thank every one for the help getting the xsurf going.    But I must say the Miami deal really piss's me off. If he no longer supports it then he should just release a key file for all to use. I am here with money in hand to buy a key from him.

I need a key for miami and I dont care how I get it?!? If someone can help send me an email!
