You probably did this but just in case you missed it - make sure the SCSI ID for the ZIP drive is unique and unused. As long as cables are proper there should be no difference about where the device goes in the chain. Also assuming proper termination, which I have never fully understood, but have been fairly lucky by just applying the try it and see method until I get the proper configuration.
