I've never heard of having to configure or flash any of the supported NICs.  So far I've used 2 CNET compatibles (Kingston KNEPC2T and a SOHOWare (no part number)), a 3Com 3c589, and a Prism (Netgear MA401) without ever having to do anything except load the device (and the configuration program for the Wifi card).
