Amiga 500+ No sound only Static

Hi all. I brought an Amiga 500+ off a friend. I've managed to get it set up correctly but here Is the problem. When I have tuned it In I get a static kinda sound coming from my tv. I've tried different RF cables but always the same problem. Could It be this chip inside thats giving me the problems as I opened her up yesterday







If it Is that that's casing the problem. Could someone please redirect me to someone who could replace It. Thank you.

RF cables? so your using the A520 modulator? Try hooking up something to the two phono sockets on the back and see if you get any sound. That would rule out the modulator.

And, yes.... get that battery out right now!

My tv don't have the phono sockets. So by the sound of your reaction. That battery Is an Issue by the sounds of It?

Yes, that battery is a big issue that's eating away at the motherboard as we speak. I think the damage may already be done looking at your pics but-

The battery needs to be removed (it will work fine without) and the motherboard area cleaned to remove the acid.

Ah okies will do. Am I right In assuming that battery has something to do with the sound though?

No, nothing. The battery is only there to keep the correct time. It will not matter to you unless you want the time within workbench.
 The acid corrosion around the board will mean death eventually. The Acid corrosion around the Audio Filter circuit in your pictures doesn't look promising I'm afraid.

Not good. As you have already established. Get it out. What would you suggest I clean the area with. Also If It Is the corrosion thats killed the sound. is there anyway to fix that or would It be better for me to hunt down another A500+?

I personally would pull the motherboard out and scrub the area in the kitchen sink (make sure it dries before use though).
Any damaged components/traces can be repaired but, A500/+'s are cheap and easy to get hold of so it's time and effort vs small(ish) expense. Up to you really.

Yea well i will give that ago but If no joy. There Is another Mobo on Ebay for £20 from a guy In Hastings which Is convenient as I'm not to far from there anyways. Either way I will update you on how It went. Thanks for the help Dr .Bongo

One more thing, the battery damage looks like it's spreading to your memory expansion (the board plugged in the trapdoor underneath). Remove it and clean it before it kills that too.

Battery is out now. I found on the board it's pretty much burnt right through. No saving sound now on It. Although I think it would still be good for silent games until I can get a new board.

On a sour note, that ebay motherboard has battery damage also - avoid!

Does it need to be a 500+? I ask because I have spare A500 boards that will fit straight in the case. You can Have one for postage costs.

You can still resurrect that board - you just need to know which links have been broken and install wires there instead.

Of course knowing which lines are dead is the tricky bit, but that's why God invented schematics and multimeters.

I'm rubbish when it comes to that kinda thing to be honest. I'm the kinda person who botched a Sega Saturn Bios change

As long as the memory expansion you have is functional, it should work fine in a 500.

Postage? Not sure. I guess the £6.90 mark on the ebay auction would be accurate.

I just need to dig one out and test it first before I say 'yep you can have it'.

Hi!

If you have multimeter, or any voltage measuring device which can scale to 0-12V, please measure voltages on U14 chip (TL084CN) on pins 1 and 7. Shouldn't be much more than 2,5 volts.  Please look at this pinout diagram --->

I had 2 channels knocked out of my 500+ mobo, so only could hear whisperlike sound on one loudspeaker. I found out, it had 11volts on pin 1 (Right audio output pin), but only 2.x volts on pin 7 (Left audio output). So you should take a look at that chip also, it's amplifier chip on your Amiga.

These chips are easily obtainable, and cheap so you should be able to replace it if it's at fault.

At present I'm working on getting them down here. The guy who I'm doing the deal with Is getting them to the post office in the morning to weigh them so afetr I know what they are going to cost to send. I will get the courier to collect them and get them down to me. Not sure on price but I'm sure it wont be too much but as soon as I know I will let people know

Hi,

Don't give up just yet, the Amiga 500 is a two sided board, if you have schematics of it, you may be able to determine which runs where ate up and solder some wire over them to complete the circuits again.
If you aren't knowledgeable in this area, I suggest you keep it for parts when you find a new one.

If you want I can take a look at it for you - it's the postage that's the problem.  Alternatively get a new one, stick the old board / Amiga on EBAY and describe it as is - then someone like me can buy it and repair it =)  
 
I will bet its salvageable - it's a question of looking closely at the PCB to check the damage and use a multimeter to check connectivity against the circuit diagram and what can be seen of what's left of affected traces.

To be honest. Once I get this deal sorted with the other Amigas. You are more than welcome to the old board If you wish as I may end up using the old case for my pc Load It up with Aros or whatever lol

Sorry about the damage in your motherboard...but wouldn't you rather own an Amiga 1200 instead? It is a real Amiga after all and it is better than A500+ with no limitations or restrictions. Just my thought on this matter.

As for the Amiga radio it is sad that the only thing comes out of it is music . I wish it was an Amiga talk show radio, where people talk about everything Amiga and there are people calling and so forth. Sad

I wish i could afford a 1200 to be honest. Those seem to be dead expensive from what I seen on Ebay . But I don't mind the lower models. As long as I can do what I need to do. I.E Monkey Island and my music programs
