Amiga 500+ No sound only Static
« on: February 28, 2013, 07:26:38 PM »
Hi all. I brought an Amiga 500+ off a friend. I've managed to get it set up correctly but here Is the problem. When I have tuned it In I get a static kinda sound coming from my tv. I've tried different RF cables but always the same problem. Could It be this chip inside thats giving me the problems as I opened her up yesterday

If it Is that that's casing the problem. Could someone please redirect me to someone who could replace It. Thank you.

RF cables? so your using the A520 modulator? Try hooking up something to the two phono sockets on the back and see if you get any sound. That would rule out the modulator.

And, yes.... get that battery out right now!

I meant rig something up to the two audio phono sockets on the Amiga (a hi-fi/soundbar/amp etc.)

Yes, that battery is a big issue that's eating away at the motherboard as we speak. I think the damage may already be done looking at your pics but-

The battery needs to be removed (it will work fine without) and the motherboard area cleaned to remove the acid.

Ah okies will do. Am I right In assuming that battery has something to do with the sound though?

No, nothing. The battery is only there to keep the correct time. It will not matter to you unless you want the time within workbench.
The acid corrosion around the board will mean death eventually. The Acid corrosion around the Audio Filter circuit in your pictures doesn't look promising I'm afraid.

Not good. As you have already established. Get it out. What would you suggest I clean the area with. Also If It Is the corrosion thats killed the sound. is there anyway to fix that or would It be better for me to hunt down another A500+?

I personally would pull the motherboard out and scrub the area in the kitchen sink (make sure it dries before use though).
Any damaged components/traces can be repaired but, A500/+'s are cheap and easy to get hold of so it's time and effort vs small(ish) expense. Up to you really.

One more thing, the battery damage looks like it's spreading to your memory expansion (the board plugged in the trapdoor underneath). Remove it and clean it before it kills that too.

I just repaired an A1200 with the same problem.

The capacitors had leaked (as usual) which was half of the problem - the other half of the problem was that the leaking capacitor had dissolved the +12V line going to the op-amp chip. Make sure the op-amp has +12V and -12V supplies.

A short wire fixed it right up for me (along with a couple of new caps, naturally)

Battery is out now. I found on the board it's pretty much burnt right through. No saving sound now on It. Although I think it would still be good for silent games until I can get a new board.

Not surprised looking at your pictures :( sorry. Still, I'm sure you'll get a replacement easy enough.

While your playing silent games tune your pc..etc... into http://amigaradio.info and keep in the mood :)

Haha. It's funny you should say that. I've been listening to It while working on this Amiga. It's given me the taste so to speak. Thing now would be to order this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COMMODORE-AMIGA-A500-PLUS-REV-8A-MOTHERBOARD-WITH-2-04-ROM-/170997485295?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item27d03e8eef

Maybe this little lesson has Installed a fresh Amiga fire into me. It's been a few years lol

Anyways. Here is the Burn I was talking about

Damn. That nasty lol
