Check the cable.
Easy way to tell. Get both ends of the cable. On the ethernet RJ45 cable you will see it has little plastic spring clips on top. Turn both ends around so the clips face the bottom, hold them side by side, so the cable kinda looks like this.

Ok, so now you can see the thin coloured wires in the bottom.
IF =
The colours are in the SAME order from left > right you have a PATCH cable (no good for Comp>Comp configuration)
IF =
The colours are in a different order, more than likely X-Over :-)
EG i have an X over cable here and the order of the wires is ;
RJ45 plug #1 =
green,white/orange,blue,orange,brown
RJ45 plug #2 =
orange/white,orange,blue,green,brown
Oh, and it says Xover on it :-)
