Just a couple guesses, try removing the ROM completely from the GVP and move the IDE card into a closer slot?

BTW, while I'm waiting for the Buddha card to make it across the "pond", does anyone have a GVP prep disk they'd be willing to make a copy of for me?

AFAIR the "prep disk" doesn't include anything other than GVP's horribly outdated HD prep tools and a mem tester.  Can download better stuff off Aminet than what's on there.
