Unfortunately, that is most, if not all companies.

The way I see it, the biggest window of opportunity for a new platform is now... before the release of Windows Longhorn when all the hype and worry about a big brother operating system and hardware is worrying people. Amiga/KMOS/Hyperion need to take as much advantage of this as possible.

Sorry for being off-topic.

Welcome to all the new Amigans (there seems to be a lot recently). I hope that you will like the machine enough to eventually upgrade to the new platform... cheers!

Welcome, MontrealCL!
It seems that you got a real bargain there!

You should open the bottom of the A500 and take any eventual memory expansion out to check it. If there is one, it is very likely to use the same type of battery that ruined that A2000.

Have fun! :-D

Thanks to everyone for the very valuable help.  It's always hard starting off on a different platform, especially one that is very much different than the one that I am used to...

I verified under the Amiga 500 and I saw what looks to be a RAM expansion of 512K, but unfortunately, no battery backed up RTC.  (or perhaps, fortunately?  as it would have leaked all over I'm sure!!!).

In any case, I plan on taking this little slightly upgraded AMIGA 500 as far as I can, and so far, judging from what I've been told here, my next step is getting rid of the Workbench 1.2 and installing something a little newer.

As for the 3.1 ROM chips, I don't know exactly if it is the proper thing to ask here, but I'll try anyhow, please let me know if I am breaking any forum rules.  Where do I get the 3.1 ROMs & 3.x WORKBENCH?

Unfortunately, I read somewhere that there is no way for me to hook up any kind of Ethernet network, is that true, or is there a way around it?

Thanks again for all the help...

Asking where to get them is not against the forum rules IIRC. To ask where to download them would be another matter.

Softkicking (placing a copy of a new ROM in RAM) is possible, but this takes 512k of RAM, so it's not something I'd recomend on a 5-meg system. Also, it ain't legal! :-)

Your best bet would be to buy the ROMs (bundled with the OS in most cases) either used, or from a local Amiga-dealer.

Well,
Normally, you would have to use the side expansion slot to do this. You have an accelerator there, so this isn't doable.

There is a way to work around this, but it won't be easy. I haven't done it myself, but in theory it is possible:

The A1200 has an internal port called the clock port. It was originally designed for fitting a simple RTC, but clever engineers soon figured out ways of putting other type of hardware on it.
It is possible to put a clock-port in the A500, using a special adapter. You can then connect a USB-card on this. Using the USB-card, you could either connect an Ethernet expansion, or a simple USB-ethernet adapter.

This would require a lot of work, however, and I'm not sure if it would fit in the machine.

It would be somewhat similar to THIS, however a different clockport adapter was used.

@MontrealCL

I take it you're from Canada? There is an Amiga dealer in Canada, but I can't remember who it is.

Software Hut in the US sell OS3.9 CDs, and Kickstart 3.1 ROMs. The OS3.9 CD has Workbench 3.1, 3.5 & 3.9 on it (if i remember correctly).

Click here for the Software Hut OS3.9/Kickstart ROM page.

Are you in the UK?
If so I will sell you a 4Mb SIMM for £5 inc. P&P.

Congratulations on obtaining a powerful little system! I am still using my A500/A530 as well.

You might consider adding an external box so you can add extra hard drives, CDROM/CDBURNER etc. Hopefully your A530 came with an external SCSI cable. I used an old 486 Desktop box. I moved the hard disk from the A530 sidecar as it gets quite hot in there.

The A530 comes stock with a 68030E (economy) CPU that does not include the MMU capabilty of the full 68030. This is not a problem, unless you wish to install Linux, as the onboard circuitry handles MMU. I replaced mine with a full 68030, and had to move a jumper to disable the MMU circuitry. I found a little improvement in performance in regards to compiling source files, but not much.

There is also a place to add a 68881/68882 Motorola FPU which is a huge improvement for apps designed to take advantage of the FPU's math functions. Again, most games don't require FPU, so not a major issue. There is yet another slot to add a PC Emulator, to run old DOS apps, but I never had the desire to try it.

I have recently upgraded my ROMS to WorkBench 3.1, which runs fine. The nice thing about 3.1+ is the CDROM Filesystem included. You can get CDROM file systems from Aminet, if you are not running 3.1+ however. I burn CD's using MakeCD. Please note, that if you wish to upgrade your ROMS, use must use a ROM specifically designed for A500 or A2000, as they are different to the A1200/A3000/A4000's.

To run a lot of old games that do not like versions of WorkBench higher than 1.3, I use a softkicker 'SKICK' also available from Aminet. I can dual boot both systems easily. Some of the old games will not work with acceleration, which can be turned off with a hardware switch, (but this disables your SCSI Controller/hardrives), and runs off the original 68000 CPU on the A500.

As for Internet, I am currently working on that by means of Internet sharing with a PC, using SAMBA and MIAMI, via a serial connection, now that I have WB3.1.

I have the GVP manuals, and GVP drivers/hard disk preparation software (EasyPrep and ExpertPrep) that work great with your A530 if you need them. HD-ToolBox works as well, but is not as fast. The manuals are brief, but packed with everything the average user wishes to know about the hardware and the GVP software in an easy to understand format. These used to be available on GVP's website, but I see they are gone now.

Hey it is nice to see someone else is still using this system. Back in it's day when it came out it was very expensive, and it was a very tough decision to buy this and retain the A500, or spend a little more for a A3000. I have no regrets. If you have questions, or need manuals/software, let me know!

Thanks to everyone who replied...

Jjans: Cool, another AMIGA 500/GVP A530 user.  When I got the Amiga, the previous owner gave me all the disks and manuals for the A530 so I got lucky, but unfortunately no external cable, but I do have an external SCSI cable lying around with a terminator.

My next upgrade route is to get the newest ROMs (3.1) installed.  Will have to look around for that I guess.

Do you know where I can find a 4 meg GVP simm memory stick???  I'm currently at 4 megs (out of a total of 8).

Last night, I managed to fix my Amiga 2000 (by replacing the CPU socket) so I might opt to upgrade that system as well, but in any case, the 500/530 combo is the most powerful piece of AMIGA hardware that I have right now, and it's what's currently being used...

Do you know if it's possible to somehow install the GVP 530 in an AMIGA 2000?  I know the connections are different (but compatible) to the ones found on the Amiga 2000...

Hello,

Software hut in the US stocks GVP SIMMs , www.softhut.com
You will be charge Duty, GST and PST on items shipped as well as the Canada Post Charge to clear customs.

Try livewiresystems.ca in Ottawa, they migh also have some SIMMs.

I have used both companies before and highly reccomend them.

Cheers
