A500+ problems - is it dead?
« on: July 02, 2004, 06:50:50 PM »
Hi all

I have an A500+, bought from a car boot sale. I can't get a picture on my TV with it though.

My questions are:

1. Could it be the modulator? I have plugged it in and tried the aerial cable in both the rear port and the "Video Out" port, but no success.

2. The disk drive doesn't click when there is no disk - symptomatic of bigger problems?

3. Potentially on the plus side - the Caps Lock key light flashes when I press Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga.

Do you think the thing is too far gone, or is it a simple fault?

Hi r_welfare,

First try hooking up a normal video cable (RCA to RCA) from the Amiga 500s Composite video out to your TVs video in.  You should see a grey-scale picture (b/w).  If this does not work then open up your Amiga 500 and press down on all of the socketed chips.
My favorite TV shows:  Star Trek Voyager, Forever Knight, Stargate SG1, Married with Children, As Time Goes By, Mr. Bean, Smallville, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Xena

Is your TV tuned into Channel 36?

Gentlemen

Thanks for the tips. Opened the machine up today (with the help of a 1200-owning knowledgeable friend), and lo and behold someone had fitted a ROM switcher, but managed to put the ROM chips in the wrong way round (we believe), either way the ROM chips were completely fried (charred on the tops). Ah well, I've salvaged some spares...back to the small ads/car boot sales/eBay to find a working one...

If you send me the rom switcher, I will ship to you a Kickstart 3.1 ROM and the 6 Workbench 3.1 disks for your Amiga 500.  At least this way your Amiga 500 will work again.   :-D
