Thank you for such a quick reply! :)

Regarding transdisk:
I don't understand what you mean by transferring to a file first, since I have only 1mb - when I boot into WB1.3, I have 888216 bytes of free memory, but the ADF image file is 901120 bytes (=880k). That's why I chose this method - as I understand, it should write directly from the serial port to df0, without requiring 880k free memory. Or did I misunderstand that transdisk method completely?

I've seen links to some other transfer software, but most of these programs are Kick2.0+, so that's a no-go in my case.

Regarding HD:
Something strange is happening - I take a freshly formatted 1.44mb floppy and put it into my Amiga - the following procedure:
1. WB loads completely
2. I eject the WB disk and insert formatted HD disk
3. An icon with "DF0:BAD" appears - I click on it, then right click on Disk and select Initialize
4. It asks me for WB1.3, so I switch the disks again
5. Asks me to insert the disk to be initialized and I do that and say Continue when it warns me that all data will be erased.
6. It starts formatting - it says formatting and verifying cyl 0 two or three times and then quits with the following message:
Initialization failed
bad sector number
try a different disk

Is it possible it is a hardware problem? Something like a dirty fd0 or misaligned head or something completely different?

[Edit: I've just tried the same procedure with some DD disk and it was the same error!! Then I tried formatting with X-Copy 9 and strange things happen:
First I formatted the top side and it completed successfully. Then I tried the lower side and verify errors appeared on the first half of the disk.
Then I tried formatting that HD disk, first the top side, then the lower. Results? Top - verify errors on the first 15 of 79, it's ok from then on. Lower - first half has verify errors, it's ok from then on.
And another interesting thing - I tried formatting the upper side again, and there were errors up to 11 and ok from then on. 11 to 15 were "healed" or what? This is getting very very strange... :( I hope that this additional info is helpful in any way.]

Sorry for these newbie questions, but I have no idea what's wrong! :(
And sorry for that off-topic HD stuff, but it *is* related in my case, since that seems to be a part of the problem with transferring from PC to Amiga.

Hum,
Can you use something other than X-Copy ?

Like the original amiga format comand from the menu?

If that doesn`t work then you may indeed have a faulty/dirty floppy or a batch of bad DD floppy disks...

I may be wrong here, but it is my understanding that you can only use 1.0 MB floppies to format 880K disks with the Amiga. As for your transADF problem, I should have a solution for you shortly.

@blobrana: Yes, I tried the format from the menu, and the second time it completed the format successfully on the DD disk. Then I tried writing something to it with transdisk again and there were errors - the disk would boot, but then lock up the Amiga very soon.

@nobrakes: Thank you for that info, but that's not what I'm looking for.

@jjans: I did some more testing and found out that the cable is 100% ok, transdisk works as it is supposed to. Everything is transferred the way it should, but it is written with errors - so, the only problem that is still unsolved is the floppy problem.
I don't know about the HD disks - a few places on the net tell me that this Chinon is supposed to read/write without problems.

I have just opened the floppy, cleaned the heads and now I can format DD disks without any problems. Using the transdisk method works without problems now. But HD disks still don't work - still the same error message:
Initialization failed
bad sector number
try a different disk

Does that mean my drive is DD only, or is there something I can do to force it to use HD disks as well? Let me remind you, by "use HD disks as well" I mean "use HD as DD", not "use HD as HD and magically have 1.44mb of space". There is a jumper at the back of my Chinon FB-354 drive - what does it do?

BTW Should I take this problem to a new (=hardware related) thread, so that I don't pollute this one with (now) OT stuff??

I've heard of these drives somewhere in an earlier posts.
It seems to me that I remember something about Chinon claims of handling HD Disks as somewhat dubious, but I cannot confirm this myself as I have never seen this drive.  I would think that you would need to use double density disks to write ADF images to.

Hi there! Sorry to bring this old thread up, but I'm at a loss!

I have an A500+ and I've used the Amiga Explorer's setup function to transfer files to my Amiga. Now, it put two files in my Ramdisk, one being setup and the other being setup2. The first one is the script which is listed earlier in this thread, the other apepars to be jibberish (At least, when I TYPE it). In WB, both have Hammer icons.

What am I supposed to do now, with those files? According to the website, I'm supposed to get AExplore and AExplore.info.

My WB version is 2.04.

Thank you to whomever manages to help me out with this!

Hello there Dr Jones!

Sorry to hear your probs. I will recreate you setup  on my machine and try to help you when I get a chance this weekend.

I believe the setup file needs to be run using Rexx. IE type 'rx RAM:setup' ...

PMAIL me with the links you followed and your machine (OS, Windows Version, etc if you continue to have problems, and I'll recreate your setup on my machines and try to find you a solution.

Happy New Years!!
